I'm confused. Santa Rosa?

Hey everyone,

Newbie here. Wanted to buy a Macbook soon (I need it before mid-July). I hear there's about to be an update to the Macbook series - what kind of update is it? Where do the rumors come from? Are they substantiated?

Santa Rosa is a new chipset from Intel that offers a higher front bus speed, more efficiency etc.

Intel’s forthcoming Centrino notebook platform, codenamed Santa Rosa, will be released in May, according to TG Daily.

The next generation Centrino platform was introduced at Intel Developer Forum in September 2006. It is designed for use with Intel Core 2 Duo (codenamed Merom) processors and will feature 667MHz up to 800MHz front-side bus. The FSB speed can be dynamically reduced and raised, as required by the operating workload.

The new platform, also known as Centrino Pro, is likely to have integrated Graphics Media Accelerator X3000. TG Daily has learned that the Santa Rosa’s integrated graphics chip in platform’s 965GM “Crestline” chipset will be DirectX 10 compatible.

The Santa Rosa will incorporate forthcoming 802.11n Wireless standard and ‘Robson’ flash memory based hard drive cache, the chip maker said.

Initially, Centrino Pro is claimed to integrate 3G wireless solution, but Intel and Nokia recently announced that their joint 3G module development plan was canceled.

Along with new notebook platform, Intel will introduce new Core 2 Duo Mobile processors in May, with 800MHz FSB support, compared to 667MHz in current Meroms.

That's great - but do we have any word on if Apple will use them in their Macbooks at all, and if they do, when? Thanks again! :)
 
I get that. But where do these rumors come from? What makes them substantiated? Why do people keep talking about a may/june release? I gotta buy a Macbook soon and I'd hate to feel like an idiot by purchasing one on the brink of a major release.

Where do any rumors come from? People take bits of information they read/see/hear about that are related to the same area and piece them together into something that could, in the realm of possibility, happen. Nothing is substantiated, which is why they are rumors. The only thing we can go on is that:

1) Apple switched to Intel, which makes Intel's (well publicized) road-map our best bet to determine what may happen next.

2) Intel has announced that Santa Rosa will be released in Q2 07, which is the April/May/June timeframe. As it is April now, May/June seem logical.

Basically do your research before you buy. Nobody here can tell you what will happen or when, but based on the information available, you can make a well-informed guess.

No, it isn't. Crestline is the new chipset.
 
Seeing as I took the plunge and bought my MacBook today, I can safely say that it's one hell of a relief knowing you don't have to play the guessing game anymore. Up yours, Santa Rosa.

Stop posting false information. I already stated that Crestline is the new chipset which is even mentioned in the article you quoted.
