I'm curious what will you guys actually use the iPad for?

I've noticed a lot of Apple enthusiasts on these forums. So I just wondered. Is anyone actually really gonna use the iPad cus in my openion it lacks some functions. Or are you just gonna buy it cus it's Apple? :)
 
I won't be getting one. That said, if you have Wifi in your house the iPad allows web browsing and the use of any web app anywhere within Wifi Range. Same as your iPod Touch, but with a bigger screen > more info on screen > more interaction area on screen. It won't take developers long to come up with some killer apps that alone will justify buying a $500 iPad.
 
I'm going to use it on the toilet and send responses to duplicate thread starters who can't come up with an original thread topic or don't want to add to an existing thread already covering their question. ;)
 
e-Book Reader, listen to music & watch videos/movies when traveling/work/etc., surf the web before going to bed, play games, play with it with my son (most important reason i'm buying an iPad).

I couldn't make such a hard and fast statement before actually using one for a month or so. There are just too many areas where it could be way too limiting.

That pretty much sums it up. people will do what they do now with their ipod touches and iphones but on a bigger screen. Some will buy because its a shiny new device with an :apple: on it.

I hear you, though I'm more than willing to make the leap. I know my usage patterns extremely well, as well as the reasons why I *don't* use my MBP in many situations, and the iPad will do just fine for me - in fact better than the MBP.

I have figured out workarounds for the very few things I currently need that the iPad doesn't (yet) do - and that's based on only what is 100% confirmed from the keynote or PR fluff on Apple's site. I am of the belief however that there is still much yet to come prior to the device shipping. Stuff that will render any workarounds moot for me.
 
Is there a really a need for another thread like this? Why does ever newb who registers on MacRumors need to start a new thread on how he/she WON'T be buying an iPad?

Those who are not buying an iPad - move on.. go to other forum sections.. No one cares why you won't be buying iPad, or why you think it will fail, or why it doesn't fit your needs. Leave this forum to those who actually want to use and discuss iPad.
 
Reading is going to be a joy on this thing. Also, I'll be developing for it in the future :)
 
I'm an academic researcher who likes to read his paper queue out and about as well as making notes of ideas he has. I also deliver talks at conferences and want something portable I can use for presentations. These are the main two things I use my current laptop for when not at home. These are both what I intend to use an iPad for (since for my experiments I need a much beefier machine than an easily portable laptop). It has the added benefit of having a focus point that I can adjust (by making small movements of my hands whilst I'm reading) reducing my eye strain and making it easier to read texts.

With regards to recent announced software, I plan on getting the Keynote and Pages (to allow me to begin the first drafts of papers as I'm researching) and OmniOutliner (for outlining papers) and OmniGraffle (for producing diagrams). I am sure that Papers will be ported to the iPad (for actually holding my reading queue) as well as some mindmapping applications. That's enough to justify for me the purchase of one, quite apart from what else anyone else develops.

That would be the only reason. But actually, I have an iPhone and a Macbook Pro. I have no need for a very large iPod Touch..... I mean iPad.
 
Pretty much everything I use my 13" MBP for now... plus all the apps I use on my iPhone. The iPhone will get many more hours of standby vs use as every app I use on my iPhone will be that much easier for me to use, read, or play games on the iPad.

Movies, email, surfing, pictures, gaming, reading emags/ebooks, listing to music etc...

I rarely use my iPhone to surf unless I have no other alternative but find it a pain to to deal with all the zooming/panning to get around a website. I've done some reading on the Amazon app but again, spend more time flipping pages then reading, never felt right or enjoyed it to get through a book on such a small screen. Look forward to a more "normal" page layout and ability to read articles without moving the page ever few sentences.
 
I talked my wife OUT of wanting a Sony PRS-700 book reader, because of its B/W screen for $400 :rolleyes:. Another $100 and i can buy something i actually like. She'll start using it mainly for book reading but i'm sure it'll become her new best friend before long.
 
everything! I feel it will become my new friend. To be honest I think it will be the device, like the iphone that changes the world.

I literally couldnt imagine what I would do without my iphone now. I dont mean that my life would end but it is so ingrained now in my daily action!
 
At home, it will be used for surfing the web, and doing light office type work.
When I travel, it will hold my images from my camera and surf the web.

I'm on the fence. I absolutely don't need one. One would be nice to have to review for my Blog. I can afford one. I don't need one. If I have one I can really put it through it's paces and find it's cracks. I don't need one.

Get the point? ;)
 
I will use it for work. I can not wait to have the MLS in my folio. I am going to seriously enjoy writing up, modifying and manipulating contracts on the fly with transactiondesk.com. :cool:
