I'm growing very weary of The Usual Suspects berating EDGE's data rate. It's so en vogue to bash the network technology now, even people who who think GSM is sms shorthand for "orgasm" are into it. It's right behind bashing Bill Gates and George W. Bush. 4sure.

Let's cut the crap, tweakers; yes, we've all been to the speed tests at dslreports.com. We've seen the numbers. But how does the EXPERIENCE FEEL? One of the lamest comparisons I've read was over at the Huffington Post. Some amateur analyst compared putting EDGE on the iPhone to building a Corvette that can only go 35MPh. I guarantee you two things: he's never owned a vette, and he hasn't used an iPhone.

Just for fun, I shut off 3G functionality on my Samsung Blackjack for several weeks using the engineering configuration menu (*#1546792*#). This puts the phone in EDGE (big "E" at the top of the WM screen) mode. What I experienced was a connection drastically slower than 3G, but by no means a throwback to the days of Prodigy at 2400 baud everyone would have you believe it is. The caveat: Cingular's network in South Florida has been top-drawer for the past three years. Your milage may vary.

I spent the entire day with several iPhones yesterday. The surfing, email, and widget performance was twice as comfortable than on my Blackjack on the same network. (Yes, I was sure to turn WiFi off.) No, download times were nowhere near my Comcast connection at home. But when you don't expect 6MB/s from a darn portable communications device, you are pleasantly surprised with what you do get. And I was.

The moral of the story: 35MPh in a Corvette doesn't feel so bad when you're used to 5MPh in a Toyota Tercel, which is a great analogy (if I do say so myself) when you consider most of you iPhoners are upgrading from plastic toys with microbrowers and amd sjitty crmpedf keyboasrtdds.

As for me, I'm waiting -- not for 3G, but 30Gigs ... of iPod storage space. (Notice anything interesting about flash memory prices lately?) But that's another post.

P.S. Three years from now, you're going to be so in love with Apple + AT&T being in bed together. ;)

im getting about 150 kilobits a second on edge with 4 bars!
not super fast, but very usable!

and I cannot even get ANY 3G signal for many many miles! as is the case for most people!

haha yea

i think people would be more upset getting thier iphone home and not being able to surf at all for lack of 3g coverage. or the thing dieing after an hour of use if the power comsumption is more as apple claimed

The iPhone is a dramatic improvement over the best performance I ever got with my Treo 700p on Verizon 3G. Believe it!!

One good thing about AT&T EDGE: you won't get chopped!

The AT&T EDGE data rate is such that you never ever have to worry about bumping into a Verizon style 4GB cap on the iPhone "unlimited" data plan. :)

Instead of describing it as "All you can eat" I describe it as "All you can get".

Everyone made EDGE sound like dial up. But i think the EDGE is very acceptable. It lets me do all the things i need to do but just a little slower.

how can you people compare 3.6mbit HSDPA to 250kbit EDGE? thats REDICULOUS!!! you are paying for high speed, why are you accepting edge at all?

you pay $20 for high speed and you get 3.5G on phone X
you pay $20 for high speed and you get 2.75G on iphone

do you see the problem?

edge is like dialup, its garbage and its outdated by todays standards, its 2 generations old! most providers in the UK do HSDPA which is PAST UMTS speeds.

you are paying for highspeed, EXPECT HIGHSPEED not dialup speeds.

americans are so funny,

what phone is slower than the iphone currently at the same price (what phone represents a tercel).. NONE! the tercel gets like 40mpg what phone has a longer batt life than the iphone? maybe only 2 or 3 SE phones that have 9hrs batt. those SE phones are 3G meaning they are a tercel but with a twin turbo engine swap with 800WHP

you pay $300 at the very most for a 6spd corvette that is limited to 198mph
OR
you pay $600 for a 4 spd automatic corvette that is limited to 60mph

BTW most phones in the range of the iphone have full HTML browsers with flash support, you are comparing free flip phones to your half grand iphone. and whats funny is since the free phones have java applet support they can get opera mobile for free with is full html

As I mentioned in another thread, the real world difference between Edge and 3G for something like web browsing is not as great as the difference in raw "speed" would have you believe due to the high latency present in both systems.

Comparing the load times for www.cnn.com on safari w/Edge against PIE and Opera (both running on my WM EVDO Rev. 0 Pocket PC phone) was not that dramatic.

Safari (EDGE): 1 minute 26 seconds
Pocket IE (EVDO): 50 seconds
Opera (EVDO): 56 seconds

on the treo forums they constantly get 800kpbs vs 180kpbs the iphone gets in real life? thats not a diffrence? i can post screen shots if you want as well as videos

There is a huge difference between raw speed on a large one file download, and real world browsing of a website.

How fast does it take the treo user to load the entire www.cnn.com website? That is a far more useful metric from a user perspective.

non-american's that have not used our network are so funny. you can sit there and say how horrible it is all you want, but we are the ones using the phone and the network. at&t obviously did a major upgrade as evidenced by increased speeds many users reported thursday evening. i have used edge in the past and it did not load this quickly. the browser helps a lot as well. it renders pages beautifully. until you have used edge on the iphone on the network that it was optimized to work with, you really can't judge the speed of edge because you have no experience. furthermore, as has been mentioned, many people would have NO coverage if it were using 3G as we do not have coverage in every area yet. not to mention the battery issues that have already been explained. so maybe you want 3G because you aren't here and able to use it, but you sound like a bitter hater. and you have sounded like a bitter hater again and again. we get it, you think edge sucks. we don't and we are using it. i haven't heard too many complaints from people actually USING edge on the iphone, in fact, most of what is being heard is the opposite - faster than expected. so who's really funny? yeah, the person that has never even used the iphone or its edge network.

except the iphone is not a corvette (ew). maybe a bentley, definitely a mercedes. go do donuts in the parking lot or drag race with your corvette, we'll cruise in our benz.
