Okay so i'm a sort of newbie here since 2004 , and i started of my Mac Crusade with a lovely B/W G3 300 Mhz and then onto a iBook G3 800Mhz.

For what it's worth i loved my iBook G3 , did what ever i need it to do, i then went on to the Powerbook G4 1.33 15" and that made my eye's water at the time for the power it had.

All this time the Powermac G5 was there , but in my eye's out of my price range and i thought not that much faster then the G4 i was at.

from the 15" i went to an eMac as a 2nd machine then sold my 15" for a royal sum and then bought a iBook G4 1.2 Ghz the eMac soon follwed the Powerbook on ebay that brings us up to december 24th 2004 ( cos that's when i bought my iBook lol), new year ment new comitments for me like getting wed in April and a month away in May around USA and New Zealand.

I was all then willing and ready to take the iBook with me until the last minute the speakers went on the iBook and this made me think maybe it was not up for the bumping and grinding of aiports and bagadge handlers, so posting on the forums here see the iBook go to a new home and live out it's life with a new loving owner. For me however a new Machine was needed ..... so 2 days before the big day i made the decision to buy a 12" Powerbook G4 1.33Ghz with 768Mb.

The Powerbook 12" has been the best buy i ever bought - my iBook held a place in my heart for being there when i wanted it , but the power made up for all the performance hits on video ect..

so that brings me to my next buy.... Powermac G5 1.8 dual ( i know not current but cheap ) and all i can say is WOW - what have i been missing

the Powermac has been with me for 2 day's and i have done more the 1 weeks worth of encoding and editing with the Powerbook in the 2 day's i've had it.

So .......do what you have to , sell you grandma , sell your wife and even sell your left nut but get the Powermac - YOU WILL NOT BE DISSAPOINTED

for the record i compute with :
1.8 dual G5
1gb Ram
9600 128 mb
160 GB hdd

12" 1.33 Ghz Powerbook
768 Mb ram

Tiger as standard

Peace people:) oh YEAH

well congrats on a heck of a computing experience. I am kinda hoping that the Intel switch will bring that whiz-bang pop back to all the machines in the lineup. But yeah, pretty much any dual G5 is goign to get you around for quite a while with that bit of a speed edge.

I have been oh so tempted by the new Powermac dual-core 2.0 GHz. It seems like my PB just isn't cutting it anymore. Congratulations on the new Powermac. Do you mind my asking how much you paid for it?

I have the powermac G5 dual 1.8 too. Its a great great computer. I upgraded the graphics card for an ATI X800 Xt (mainly for motion 2) and i noticed a huge performance difference from the stock 9600 it came with.

I upgrade computers regularly, but I'm fairly confident the machine bought Jan 04, will last me well into the Powermacs change to Intel.

Final Cut Studio is on my shpping list next , do you think the ATI X800 will make a big differnce to the speed ? if so then i will consider the upgrade.

Interesting your impression of G5...since I too am shortly making a helluva jump from my old workhorse G4 500 DP to DP G5...should be good 'cos I'll be skipping quite few incarnations of PowerMac. Still productive today is testament to the serviceability of the 'old Gigabit machine...basic editing in FCP 4.1 very usuable, but scheduling o/night encodes is an anachronism.

I agree, I switched from a series of G4 machines to the machine in my sig and I was blown away, especially with video apps. encoding is a dream now, and I'm thrilled that sometime next year I can upgrade the video card and get a further boost in performance. love it.

Hey, congratulations on the new purchase. I just traded my P4 3.0GHz laptop away for a Dual Proc. 2.0GHz PowerMac G5 (the type with 8 RAM slots and PCI-X)! It's been an unbelievable experience, but I still have a few upgrades to make (i.e. 512mb RAM to 1GB/1.5GB, upgrade the 64MB ATI 9600 to at least a 128MB card). All I can say is... "I've been missing out!"

Only in Motion mate, and maybe Livetype. The real time preview on Motion takes a lot of processing and it seems that Apple have shifted alot more of that processing onto the GPU rather than CPU, so a faster card does make abig difference.

I did a music video with the stock 9600 and if your taking in a big portion to motion (1-2 minute slices) the machine would get to thte point where it would CHUG, and yet with the faster GFX card, I can hapily work away with large pieces of footage, loads of layers and particle effects and it seems happy, no more spinning wheel of death or crashs.

Final Cut however isn't as bothered, really if quick disolves are the most the machins going to be put through, your not going to notice a difference.

Photoshop again, no difference.

So it somthing to consider, but maybe after a bit more experimenting and familiarity with the software, but definetly not essential at this stage I'd say :D

PS :- My PB still hasn't arrived -- DAMN TNT :D
