So my 3G is busted, noting is physically wrong, but the battery has really deteriorated and it shuts off randomly when i use it. its running 3.1.2, so i took it in and he said he couldn't find anything wrong (of course) and that it would be $199 for a new refurbished one because its out of warranty, so I'm just gonna get a 32gb 3GS, I'm really angry at the whole situation, everything was fine before 3.1, but i need a phone that doesn't turn off on me.

uh, there's always a choice, you can buy a flip phone.

Geeze you guys... give him a break! You're acting like he's "TheSpaz"!

Anyways... OP: That sucks that your iPhone 3G doesn't work like it used to. The iPhone 3GS is a much better device, so I'm sure you'll be happy with it.

3.1.2 was supposed to fix the random freezing though... hmm.

I'm running 2.2.1 on my iPhone 3G right now and it's rock solid and very fast and stable. Perhaps if you wanted to try 2.2.1 to see if your problems go away, you could do that.

Until Apple fixes the 3.mess, I'll stay on 2.2.1 because that's what I'm most happy on.

Actually, $199 isn't that bad for a new refurbished 3G that doesn't extend your contract. It sucks you're out of warranty though--try to get Applecare on your 3GS. I've found that iPhones will malfunction if you look at them cross-eyed -- and I have already used the Applecare I bought for mine for a replacement.

Alternatively, you could check out the Droid phone that Verizon will release soon. Not exactly an iPhone killer but kinda unique and cool in a way the iPhone can no longer be now that's its so popular.

Doesn't seem like a software issue, although there may be nothing wrong with it physically, there might be something on the inside thats bad. I'd also advise to get applecare for your 3GS, that way in a year and half it won't be out of warrenty and they'll give you a free replacement. My experience at the Genius Bar with it has been steller (Apple Store Partridge Creek Clinton Twp, MI).

I'm sure you'll be extremely happy with your shiney new 3GS :)

You could get a new battery. How come nobody mentioned this? If that is the problem, it is cheaper than getting a 3GS. Let's not fool anyone, you want a 3GS, nobody is forcing you to get one.

The Droid is only "cool" because everyone is hoping it tops the iPhone much like we saw in the G1, and the Pre, and the list goes on. After a million other Android 2.0 devices come out within a month, this thing will be forgotten quickly. It might be a very good and capable phone, but if you are going for unique and cool, it is not a good choice.

Sorry about the double post.
