I'm gonna dump 3.1 and go backwards!

This is the first time I'm finding myself seriously disappointed with Apple! Updating my iPhone to version 3.1 was a big mistake! After updating, my first full day saw my iPhone's battery life DRAMATICALLY reduced. Were I'd normally end a day with about 65% battery life, that first day after 3.1 it was down to 24%. And I didn't use the iPhone any more than normal. Then I looked at various setting and, aha, Apple had turned on PUSH (I never leave PUSH on). So, I figured I'd be OK after turning it back off. It helped, but not as much as I had hoped. My second full day had me down to 42%. What the hell is going on?

In addition, my iPhone is constantly having problems sending/receiving any data via 3G. I'll try to do a Google search and it won't go anywhere. Only if I reset my iPhone will it FINALLY allow me to use Safari or check mail. I've had to reset it at least 6 times in two days to get the damn thing working again!

Then, yesterday, I was talking to a friend on the iPhone and my phone vibrated like I had another incoming call. But when I checked the screen, no other call. When I got off the phone, I discovered what caused it to vibrate... The iPhone pulled down 20 E-mails when I wasn't in the Mail app and PUSH was turned OFF! Just, out of the blue, it decided to grab E-mail!

I am ABSOLUTELY reverting back to 3.0.x if I can get my hands on it! 3.1 is definitely not ready for primetime!! Apple should be ashamed!

My iPhone 3.0 grabs emails out of the blue. It does randomly when on the phone, or when pushing phone, then contacts - those 2 steps almost always makes it grab emails too. Thus, I am pretty sure 3.1 is not causing your email issue.
 
And I've been trying to go back with my original 3g phone and that doesn't want to work either!

I've seen some of the posts on this for the 3GS, but they don't make much sense to me. Why can't you downgrade the 3GS again? I mean, if you have the .ipsw files for the previous version, you still can't downgrade? And if it's a iTunes 9 issue, you can't use an older version with the previous .ipsw and downgrade? Explain why that is one more time.

At least Microsoft, who all the Apple fanboys love to hate, posts a message for their updates that warns you about stuff like that.

You can no longer downgrade because Apple is now signing the firmware versions. Since only 3.1 is signed, only 3.1 can be installed on the 3GS. Old versions if iTunes won't allow you to downgrade either. This all came into effect on Wednesday.

This also means that those who are running 3.1 and one day they have to restore, they will be forced to restore to only 3.1. There is NO way to ever go back to a previous version on the 3GS.
 
Yep Apple finally is figuring out how to stop jailbreaking. Sucks but I think we all expected it to happen sooner or later.

It's the "is now signing" that I don't understand. What does that mean exactly?

IN easiest terms: During a restore, iTunes phones home to check and see if the firmware version can be used to restore. If the firmware version for a 3GS is not 3.1, the firmware will not be allowed to be used.

If you disable your internet connection while this is happening, the restore will not go forward till it can verify the firmware version.

So, it doesn't do this for a 3G?

Apple has made that more difficult as well. The 3G will restore to 3.01 or 3.0 but at the end it will give an error like 1015. It will stay in recovery mode and you will need to use iRecovery to kick the phone out of recovery. It can then be restored to a previous backup like normal.

I haven't tried restoring a 2G phone yet.

And all this was done to prevent jailbreaking? If so, this was not a good move on Apple's part, IMO.

It was done to prevent jailbreaking and unlocking.

Think about how nearly every single app in the app store is available for free at certain websites and by jailbreaking, you can sync those free stolen apps to your iPhone and never pay for an app again. Apple and the developers are losing huge amounts of money. Same with unlocking.

The 1015 error only happens if you've previously installed 3.1. It's caused by the mismatch between the 3.0 firmware and the 5.11.07 baseband. If you're just restoring to 3.0 and have never upgraded, you won't get this error.

Yes thats true, I should have pointed that out but didn't since we are talking about downgrading from 3.1.
 
I have an iPhone 2G I'm trying to sell on 3.1.. It's not unlocked or jailbroken, so do I need to go back to 3.0, unlock, and then sell it? Will this work or is the baseband already upgraded? If this does work, will a tmobile user be able to put their sim in and use it as a phone, iPod, and wifi? Thanks.

Downgrade to 3.0.1, then jailbreak, hacktivate, and unlock using redsn0w. Be sure to point redsn0w to the 3.0 ipsw instead of the 3.0.1 firmware to trick it into doing the unlock.

You should make clear to whomever you sell it to that he should not upgrade to 3.1 or he will lose his jailbreak and unlock.

Where is a good download of iRecovery, i can't find one.

Thanks. I just downloaded the 3.0 files from iClarified, but not the 3.0.1...
