The behavior/symptoms, and this behavior comes and goes randomly but is happening often enough to make this an unsustainable situation-

--- SETTINGS app often just opens to a black screen and then crashes me back to the Home page, or eventually shows the Settings Menu, but sometimes even clicking on a menu item sends the whole phone into a reboot or kernel panic.

--- Certain apps won't open, and just tapping them causes the whole phone to freeze then do a 5-6 minute reboot cycle.

--- 2 or 3 times, the phone froze mid-swipe between the Home page and the next page of apps, was frozen for about 2 minutes, then cycled through a 5 minute reboot.

--- Even though I restored from my previous phone, it did not bring back all of my Messages and didn't bring back any of my Safari tabs. It's been probably about 20 hours since I did the restore, and even though it gave me a message that restoration was complete, I think it didn't really complete, as whenever I open Messages I see "Syncing with iCloud paused".

How we got here-

--- The first time I tried to set up the phone, I chose to transfer data from my old iPhone (13 Pro), and put them next to each other. After several minutes the ETA for transfer was 13 hours, then it crept up to 15 and 16 hours. This was untenable for me, and I hit the Cancel button and started the setup process over.

--- The second time, the 16 Pro did not recognize my 13 Pro as a device it could log in with, so it glommed onto my iPad and I did the login through that. I got no option to transfer data, it just began the WiFi iCloud process. I canceled it.

--- The third time, the 16 still did not recognize the 13 as a nearby device (I'm wondering if this is because my phone number had now been officially switched to the 16 from the first setup attempt?), so I logged into the 16 manually. Again, there was no option to transfer data from another phone, so I chose iCloud and Restore from Back up from my most recent iCloud back up of my 13 Pro.

--- This morning I updated the iOS from 18 to 18... lol. It did not solve the crashing problems. Maybe I should've done this first before the original restoration? But also there was no prompt to update the iOS before setup. I feel like shipping with a faulty iOS might be the root of the issue?

The third restore was started about 4pm yesterday. It's 1pm now and the crashing and lagginess is off the charts. My plan is to try to restore to factory default again tonight and try to start all over and leave it running overnight, and if that doesn't work to just be at the Apple Store Monday morning when they open in hopes of getting some Genius attention.

Anyone have any insight or experience with this? Did I corrupt something by interrupting the original restore cycle? Am I wrong for expecting my Safari tabs and Messages to come through with an iCloud restore? I do have all of those apps selected on my old phone under the iCloud settings, so I expected it to just seamlessly mirror my old phone.

Check the logs in Preferences->privacy->Analytic/diagnostic(at the bottom)->Diagnostic data(at the top)
If there are kernel panics it most likely a hardware problem.

Never the less, I would try setting up the phone as new without any data transfer and check if the problem persists.

Abort the data transfer. Do a clean install of iOS 18. I mean wipe the phone, and a fresh install of iOS 18. Log into your iCloud account, then clean install your apps. No backups. No images.

See how your iPhone performs. Report back.

My 16 Pro also had a random kernel panic a few minutes after I set it up. It happened during video capture in the camera app. It hasn't happened since, so I think a hardware problem is unlikely.

This sounds very similar to my issues - also on 16 Pro. I restored from a backup, then updated the iOS to 18, and it’s horrible. Messages crash, particularly where there is more than one recipient, settings app shows a black screen, icons are missing etc. At this point the phone is barely usable.

UPDATE- I took my phone to an Apple Store and the Genius tested it and confirmed that it's bad hardware and the phone needs to be replaced. Sadly, since I bought it from AT&T, he said he can't replace it in-store for me even though I have AppleCare, and that their policy would be to repair it by taking it apart to fix the hardware issue. That's a non-starter for me. This is a brand-new item and I shouldn't have to start its lifecycle with iPhone surgery. I got a defective unit so it should be replaced by a new one.

He said my options are to return it to AT&T or call Apple Support for the expedited replacement program.

I haven't decided yet which I will do. I wanted a new phone but if this phone has bad batches out there it makes me question whether this is just a lemon year and I should wait for next year anyway and go back to my 13 Pro. I really wanted to be able to take Spatial photos/videos for the future, though.

I also might just do the Expedited Replacement just because dealing with AT&T Customer Service is generally a Kafkaesque nightmare.. lol

I'd say take it in and have them test it for the hardware issue. See my post above this one.

I'm concerned this might turn out to be a widespread production issue. On Reddit I'm seeing person after person posting this exact problem occurring on their phone and then also happening again on their replacement phone.

I'm now on my second iPhone 16 Pro (1TB, White). I have had all the same issues noted here. Apps not launching, messages and email threads not loading, etc.

I picked mine up on launch day from Apple and during my set up restore experienced an error in verizon activation and had to reboot. Upon finaly getting it activated and into iCloud for a restore, it got far enough along to allow me to leave and trade in my iPhone, but then my issues just increased. While on a 4 hour drive I experienced carplay connection issues, and the phone was kernel panicking every 6-10 minutes. Once I got to my destination I connected to wifi and finished the icloud restore. It was sem-stable enough to go to a concert

Saturday I immediately experienced more issues and decided to DFU the device, reinstall OS, and re-set up the phone. Saturday and Sunday saw fewer kernel panicks in my error logs, but that's because I just started rebooting it as soon as it started to hang.

Monday I took the device to the Genius Bar and the number of panics showed in the log qualified it for an exchange. I exchanged the device and had 24 hours of bliss! only 2 shut downs on MOnday and Tuesday! But now here I am Wednesday morning with the same issues and a phone that is barely functional. I have more than 10 kernel panics logged today alone.

I took mine into the Genius Bar today - they initially suggested I just return it for replacement, but they didn’t have any replacement devices… So I had them take a look at it - the guy pretty quickly said “do you have a VPN installed?” - I do (NordVPN) and suggested that may be the issue as he said he’d seen that before. We did a full wipe/reset and ran diagnostics and all seems fine - with just the basic apps installed. I now need to do a fresh backup from my old phone excluding the VPN and and try restore on the new one….. weird that one app that i wasn’t even actively using could have such an impact….

Update I went back to the genius bar this week to get it looked at, qualified again for replacement but the part needed to be ordred. Funnily enough, the day I went in again it was behaving well so I thought it'd be a good experiment to wait it out and see how things went. Unfortunately the phone has continued to behave poorly with multiple kernel panics a day.

Today really took a turn for the worse, around 10am ET the phone no longer had cellular service. Constantly in SOS mode, with no other verizon devices in the area having issues. Luckily my phone is waiting for me at the genius bar, so I guess I'll go today to get my third iPhone 16 Pro.

Update on mine - the fresh install and app by app update seems to have done the trick. Wasn’t too slow on a decent WiFi connection and the phone now seems stable.
