I saw somewhere a long time ago, this thing that you install, and when you open it up, you have a little window about the size of an SE/30's screen, and you have OS 7 running in there. Incredibly cute. :)

I want something like this. Does anyone know where I can get it?

Thanks

To emulate a black-and-white Mac (Plus/SE), check out Mini vMac. It's light on features, but a solid emulator. Or, for emulation of newer 68k hardware, try Basilisk II. The link here leads to the OS X port, but Windows and other ports are also available on different sites. Basilisk has a lot more features, but tends to be a bit more tempermental when it comes to settings and stability. Definitely a decent and useable emulator, though. Note for both of these, you'll have to get a hold of a ROM image from one of these older Macs; a Plus or SE for vMac, and a PowerBook/II/Quadra/Centris/LC/Performa ROM for Basilisk.

:(. I can't get a ROM Image from anywhere. Thanks for the links though...

If you know anyone with one of those older macs, there are programs out there that will run on System 6, 7, or Mac OS 8 to dump that system's ROM contents to a file. Copy it to a floppy disk or email it to yourself and you're in business.

You get download the rom file at http://www.rolli.ch/MacPlus/. Here's a direct link to the download.

Windows-http://www.rolli.ch/MacPlus/Archives/ZIP/vmac.zip
You'll need Winzip for windows

Mac OS-http://www.rolli.ch/MacPlus/Archives/vmac.rom.sea.hqx
You may need Stuffit Expander for that one. I'm not sure.

The site also contains system disk images for Systems 1.1-6.0.8.

Have fun.

Just so you know obtaining those images without owning those machines is technically piracy.

Anyways, as mentioned before basilisk is a great program. It is definetely superior under Mac OS X than on Windows. The OS X version easily recognizes files transferred through the OS while the windows port constantly had difficulty recognizing file types.

If you can use a Quadra ROM as you will have the most compatibility. Oh, be ready for some severe frustration:D

Hi all. I've been nostalgic lately, and wanted to play a couple of great old games -- "A Mess Of Trouble" and "Another Fine Mess", Ray Dunakin's amazing World Builder games. So I dug around, and got started with vMac. I've got my ROM loaded, and my system dsk's. When I run vMac, there's no error messages, but... nothing happens. Blank white screen. I can access vMac's menus, but there doesn't seem to be any way to manually start the thing working. I'm working on a Windows 98 machine. Any advice...?

Enjoy :) I've got this running right now and it works a charm

Thank you!! I've been working on this for the last five hours to figure out a basic working strategy, but most of the websites I could find were last updating in, say, 1999. Bah. But this looks straightforward and up to date.. thanks a ton! I will try it as soon as I can, and post about my results.

Thanks again. :)

No Problem. You wouldn't believe the coincidence though. Sitting in work, a friend of mine sent me that link and just out of curiosity I followed the instructions and got it working. How strange that as soon as I did that, I visted Macrumors and noticed this thread... spooky :p

No small miracle, indeed.. I'm glad it worked out this way. Tomorrow at work I'll pick up a USB drive and get to work. By this time tomorrow hopefully I'll be pulling my hair out at long-unsolved puzzles in Another Fine Mess. =)

Update: Everything is working well so far, except that the System 7.0.1 disc image files are in .smi form, which apparently can only be opened correctly by Apple Disc Copy? I don't have that, as I'm working on a Windows system, so I don't know if I have a way to get to the ".image" file within. Stuffit trial version will unpack the .bin that Apple's website hosts, but it doesn't treat the .smi as an archive file of any sort.

Any tips on how I might be able to open this .smi and get the .image? After that I'm pretty sure everything will work out well.

EDIT: I found another forum site where a user has supplied a link to a set of Mac-on-Stick files he put together, including the opened .image files. Working on it now...

EDIT2: Jackpot! here's a link to the forum page I just mentioned, for anyone else who's looking:

Glad it worked well for you :) I haven't seen System 7 for a very long time, was so cool to fire it up again after so many years :p

Yes! This is awesome. I grew up on this system. One problem though.. now that it's running, I'm attempting to install some software. But... once I have the files there in the Mac emulator, trying to run them gives me a "The program that created this file is not here etc" message. But this /should/ be an application, which should run itself.. Any idea? Did you manage to install working programs onto your own Mac-on-Stick, NATO?

EDIT: It seems like the files have a size of 0 bytes after copying over to the emulator, using HFVExplorer. If I try to copy the .hqx's whole, it says "no HQX header found". Stuffit will extract the .hqx's with no errors, except that the resulting files have no extensions whatsoever. They do have a file size, until I copy them to the emulator. But if I label the ones that should be ReadMe's as .txt manually, then copy it over, it will open in TeachText after giving an error message, and be perfectly legible. Unfortunately the ones that should be .exe's don't work similarly.

I'm going to root around in my old stuff to see if I can dig up any old mac games on their original floppies, and load those. If they work, I'll know it's a problem with downloading/converting/using Windows, and not a problem with how I set up vMac.

.smi files are self-mounting image files. These are image files with an application wrapper that mounts them without Disk Copy.

Wishing for a magic bus.
Basilisk for Windows is terrible, but its the only Mac i can get. I can't run it off my hard drive without it crashing on boot, so I have to run it off my jump drive, which gets VERY hot while doing so. The screen in System 7 is retardy, and won't let me run Marathon 2 in awesome 1280x1024 mode. So i HAVE to run it in 640x480 with boring 8-bit color. Sound is iffy at best, and the only way for me to get .sit files on my disk image is with some program called HFVExplorer, which locks up any time i try to transfer a file larger than 500kb or so.

One trick for the windows version, which may work for the Mac one, idk, is find a .wav file of anything, be that a Mac boot chime or w/e, name it the checksum value for the ROM, send it to your Basilisk folder, and theres your boot chime.
