i have a iphone 2g and ready for a 3g.. i have t-mobile and was wondering when trying to start up and unlock a "brand new" never used 3G will i able to do anything without ATT 3G sim???or will it sit there and ask me to put in the right sim card.

An iPhone without a SIM card is basically just an iPod Touch. It can do everything except make cellular network phone calls or get 3G internet access. :)

Without the sim if it wasn't activated prior to you receiving it then it will say that it "requires activation" and it will only show the slide to unlock screen. In order to use it you should just jailbreak it using redsn0w and it will be "hacktivated" in the process and will function without a sim card. If you want, you can unlock it by downloading ultrasn0w from cydia.
