I'm not receiving email or tweet notifications.

I just installed Mountain Lion and so far I'm a little bit confused. I thought that if someone sent me an email or responded to one of my tweets I would be notified via the notification centre, but its not happening. According to the Notification settings, its all switched on and set up correctly, so I don't know what the problem is.

Am I missing something?
