I just got finished playing a quick round of Nova 3 on my Iphone 4S, and I was blown away by the graphics, and this is a guy who has a PS3 with games like Uncharted 3 sitting right next to me.

I couldn't believe a phones graphics was blowing me away. Not to mention all of the older titles now available on the app store. Not to mention how much cheaper the games are, games that have the exact same features as 60 dollar games.

For example.

Nova 3 has a 6-8 hour campagin, 12 player online, with vehicles, = $7
Modern Warfare 3 has a 4 hour campagin, 12-18 player online, no vehicles = $60

Doesn't that seem a little strange to anybody else? And the graphics looked incredible on Nova 3, seriously looked like an Xbox 360 title.

Consoles better start stepping up their game IMO.

When Phones start getting games like Okami, Folklore, Bastion, Journey and Psychonauts, Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, The Darkness, Stranglehold, Shadows of the Damned and Rayman Origins, then we'll start talking about any threat to consoles.

Nova and MW also suck to equal degrees.

Home and Handheld consoles have never competed against one another. There is room in the market for both.

Even when it comes to to handheld vs Phone.

I don't think something like a Nintendo 3DS and a Smartphone compete. Totally difference animals.

I am a PS3 guy and I also have played a lot of PSP. I have to say that consoles provide the best gaming experiences. Current consoles may be trumped by PCs graphic-wise, but I'd easily pick a console over PC for gaming. Sitting in my living room, with a huge TV, a comfortable controller, playing split-screen with my friends, is just untouchable by a PC. Even if PC does have split-screen, who wants to crowd around a monitor?

Yeah, I sit on my giant couch, which the side has a nice flip over table thing. Where I put my mouse, keyboard, plug in my headset. On my massive 60 inch Pioneer Plasma TV. Where I enjoy amazing graphics, great control, and tons and tons of games on my PC.

I do this as well. Just without the 60 inch TV.

Indeed. I don't always use the TV, I have a really great Apple 30 inch monitor. That I have plugged into my GAMEPC Gaming rig, it looks better than the TV does.

But its not as big :D

I don't wanna hear that a 300 dollar 360/PS3 is 1/10th as good as my 7,000 dollar gaming PC :D

I do have a 360, Wii and PS3. And they have some awesome games, and I enjoy the controllers. But nothing compares to a PC game running on a high end rig imo.

Whenever I hear about a new Gameloft game I go on google to figure out what console IP they just ripped off.

NOVA 3 is a Crysis 2 ripoff

And the low price point on iOS is exactly why consoles are not doomed. You're never gonna get The Last of Us or Watch Dogs or Quantic Dream games on iOS for $7. What will you get is a Gameloft clone of the same IP 2 years later

Rayman Origins?? How'd that sneak by me!

Journey looks neat too.

I've been buying console games for 20 years. I play on a 50" TV with surround sound, and I look for high-budget, immersive, visually stunning games with fantastic story lines (see Red Dead Redemption). I find $60 to be a reasonable value for a game with hours and hours of scriptwriting, voice acting and animation, that I can play for 50+ hours and still enjoy new and interesting experiences. I like to get immersed in a game...that's just not going to happen on a 3.5" iPhone screen, no matter how high resolution.

The screen's 3.5", but your thumbs will be covering up half of that since there's no separate controller, so you don't even have that much real estate :p

Phones are not going to be replacing consoles any time soon. Not even portable consoles.

Everyone knows COD's single player is mostly short and is just all right. It's all about the multi-player, with nearly unlimited replay ability.

Leaked but unconfirmed Xbox docs for their next console seems to further entrench the Xbox as an entertainment hub for the living room, including possibly built in 3D, Kinect, Bluray, and DVR. If even half of that comes to fruition, it's a large step to replacing every device you might have besides your TV and cable/satellite box.

Expanding the utilization of the console to become more than just a console will double down on usefulness and longevity.

tl;dr - Consoles are going nowhere.

Well, who wants to play split-screen? I'd much rather log on and play with my friends and we all have our own screens and our own computers.

LAN parties are the bomb

I don't think you appreciate the ability to physically harm one of your retarded friends.

(Also LAN parties are boring now, almost everybody just leeches now)

I could see handheld consoles going away (I'm pretty sure all it would take is a decent controller accessory and getting developers to use it) but probably not home consoles.

You can do the same via multiple consoles on the same local network or over the Internet. We do this when we visit my family who lives fairly far away. I bring my 360 with me and connect it to their living room TV. We get up to 4 people per console so everyone gets to play. Late in the night, my brother-in-law and I each have a TV to ourselves to play zombies.

Because Call of Duty is the best thing to compare anything against. It's a multiplayer centric game with a tacked on single player experience, a multiplayer that its fans treat as a sport.

Hey. I'm one of those people with an iPad 3, iPhone 4S sat next to me and what am I excited to play after I've finished work? Team Fortress 2 on my PC, before sliding into bed with some Persona 2 (PSP port of a PS1 game).

I can't recall when I last played a game on my iPhone or iPad. I've got a lot of them (241 at last count - I like games) but nothing really sticks.

Funny you should mention split screen gaming. I hadn't done so since the Gamecube days, but I recently picked up Halo Anniversary and started playing Mario Kart Wii in splitscreen.
The most fun multiplayer/party gaming I've had in years. I play online games almost every night too.

The only thing consoles really have to worry about is PC/cloud integration in everyday life. Soon CPU speeds and GPU speeds won't really matter anymore and you will be able to pull up call of duty from your TV without need for the latest console.

The current 60 dollar per game business model is going to waiver in my opinion. I can buy games like minecraft for 26 dollars that give me unlimited hours of enjoyment, when there are plenty of really ****** games that are retailing for 60 just because thats the price point. I think it's going to be interesting to see what the industry does to combat used gaming next round.
