I'm on my 5th imac, should I just wait till next release?

Hey everyone,

Here's my experience with the imac i7 since buying my first one in Feb:
1) hard drive failure
2) power source failure
3) DOA - dent in aluminum on the front
4) hissing noise when adjusting screen brightness
5) ?????

I just switched form PC to mac and despite the problems, I'm a mac fanatic now, I love these things. But, at this point I'm thinking I should just wait until the next release comes out. hopefully that will be closer to 30 days than later because I have to return my current imac, which leaves me with no computer until the new ones out. I've decided I can wait until Aug-Sep before I lose my mind. Think it will be out by then?, any advice? Thanks!

I have the same experience as you did, now on my 5th. But my decision is to keep the 5th.

Frist, because i think there will be no new imac release in near future, even if it did, it will only be minor upgrade of things like GPU.

Second, I need a desktop now as i have sold off the old toshiba laptop, and I need a Mac for my programming.

As for you, if you don't really need an imac right now don't buy it, if you need the imac and u love it just like me, then you have no choice but to accept some minor defects. Try go for a repair instead of replacing the whole unit, I think it might be more effective in terms of solving those problems, as my 5th has a noisy HDD compare than previous units, so i have ask the apple service provider to get a new HDD for me, will be having it next week. About the screen buzzing/high pitch whine issue, all my 5 units have it, so i don;t think getting new replacement will cure the problem, so I have also ask the tech team to check this out too when they replace my HDD.

I don't get what's with these iMacs. I've been using Macs for a while now (give or take 4 years) and this is the first machine that I had to actually get replaced.

I still even have the old black MacBook and it works like a charm. Even though I don't use it as much anymore.

Anyway, if you can get your money back, then that's great. You may want to go with the new MBPs, they have i7 processors and seem to be less problematic (as far as screen goes). Also you can get a SSD instead of a HDD, so that would definitely solve the HDD issues. I don't think the MBPs have any hissing noises when you turn the brightness up and down. Well, no reports that I can see. And it just seems like the MBPs are much less problematic compared to the iMacs. (Obviously this is not a fact, so please don't eat me alive).

BUT if you really need a desktop, or can't get a full refund, then stick with this one. Chances are Apple will release something new in Sept/Oct. and hopefully the refresh will fix all these off problems.

Anyway, I'm really sorry you didn't like your first Mac, or the other 4 you got. Either way, I hope you had fun with them and like OS X, because that's what actually makes the Mac so special, to me. (that sounded oddly poetic in my head LOL).

Probably true. But doesn't the principle of it bother you just a little? I hate dropping 2 grand on something that isn't perfect for at least a few months. I don't know, this decision is killing me because I love this computer. I'm just worried that if I've had problems with four now in the first few days, how well is this thing going to hold up over the next few years?

Anyway, I'm really sorry you didn't like your first Mac, or the other 4 you got. Either way, I hope you had fun with them and like OS X, because that's what actually makes the Mac so special, to me. (that sounded oddly poetic in my head LOL).

Its not that I dislike the computer, its actually quite the opposite. I've had four of these with issues, but I've loved everyone of them. In fact, I will never buy another non-apple product. I just want one that works. Its kind of funny, I've had all these problem and apple has still managed to make a fan out of me. So, either apple is genius when it comes to creating "the user experience", or I'm just an idiot. Either way, apple has taken care of every problem I've had and even threw in a free ipod with this last return, so I'll just keep coming back.

I totally understand how you feel, coz I am in the same situation as you, and i am glad that as least there are people out there that has the same experience as I did, at least I have someone to discuss with. Paying a premium price but in return not getting a premium product, is not something i would have settled with. But considering I have get it replaced with numerous time, and the fact is they just cant get it right, I think it should have an end. For me, due to the reasons i have stated above left me no choice but to accept what i have right now. I have also been thinking of getting the mac mini + ACD but its just not what i want. So, why don't i sacrifice my little perfectionism principle and enjoy what i have.

As for the worries that you have regarding the machine might give you more problems when time comes, I think it should be settled by the apple care, since they will repair everything and i also heard that if you gone through 3 major repair, they will issue you a replacement of the machine.

I have no question with their CS as they will be the first and only company that replaced my machine this many times. But apparently they did not have the best Quality Control for this ver of Imac.
