What exactly does iCloud backups?

I did a back up of my iPhone and consumed 500mb of storage. Now, when I want to backup my iPad, it tells me there is not enough storage. How can this be possible? Is is trying to backup movies?

Settings --> iCloud --> Storage & Backup --> Manage Storage --> xxx This iPad will show you backup options = how big the next backup will be and what is taking up the most space. You can turn individual apps on or off in the backup. Camera roll was my biggest which I've disabled as everything gets sent to my mac via photostream (oooh no, all the photos, I want to delete, damn you apple, haha).

When you select iCloud backup a little message pops up to tell you that it will no longer backup when you sync to iTunes. Over the betas I have found it useful to disable iCloud backup every so often, take an iTunes backup, and then go back to iCloud backup.

You don't even have to turn off iCloud backups. All you have to do is right click the iDevice in iTunes and select Backup, and you'll get a local backup to that machine without removing your previous iCloud backups. Its a great weekly supplement to the automatic, daily iCloud backups.

Thanks! :) It apparently was the VLC app, which had quite some AVI files taking up to 6GB of space.
