seriously...

a camera phone that is better than any other
a screen that is bigger than any other
the densest dpi screen for a phone
the best handheld touchscreen ever made
crystal clear sound for a phone (something that companies in the cell business for 15 years still havent accomplished)
the longest lasting battery life for a mobile phone
a phone that can browse nearly any website in normal format
on/off button

all in their first moblie phone...

either steve jobs is in touch with aliens or every other cell phone maker has been dropping the ball for 10 years.

They're experts at it, what would you expect?

Yes i love my volume buttons too!

I think Apple's secret is that they care about the end-user experience more than any other tech company out there. Everyone else is concerned with selling millions of units but they just don't get it. Build something that challenges the norm and causes a shift in how people interact with technology and the dollars will follow.

you bring up a very good point. I vote on the former!

Either that...

..or Steve Jobs has an abnormally high IQ, which lets him bring a consistent vision of superior and innovative user experience uniformly across multiple platforms to fruition through superb execution/implementation with like-minded top talent running the show.

But aliens sounds better!

-iPhone camera can't even compare to the n95's 5 megapixel camera.

-I find it hard to believe that apple has some miraculous hold on the crystal clear call quality market.

-Are you insane? My current phone battery lasts for 5 days +. For what they are offering the battery life is impressive, but not even close to the longest.

The battery is definitely pretty damn good for a smartphone.

And I don't know if I'm the only one that thinks this, but the n95 is a big clunky box of a phone built around a camera, and even costs more than the iPhone. Granted if a camera is what you need, the n95 will get the job done better than 98% of other phones, but the iPhone does alot more.

Not to say that I will be buying one until gen 2 comes out .. lol

On all accounts, the iPhone is pure genius.
I cannot remember the last time I was so pleased with a purchase.

Yes I had some activating snafus, but that was more due to my business account and AT&T, nothing that would be a fault of Apple.

He always wears a turtle neck to cover up the Matrix style hole in the back of his neck he uses to collect information about rival companies and new technologies every night.

This sums up my feelings too. There have been times when I've sort of debated on buying something expensive, finally bought it, then still felt a little bad about spending so much money. While I did worry a little about the high price of the iPhone, now that I have one I am 100% satisfied and feel that the $600 I paid was well worth it.

I don't think that there is any alien connection with SJ :) I really feel like iPhone's OS X makes iPhone so cool, not the device itself, not hardware, but the combination of hi-tech and OS X.
Apple have done a great job, basicly they have created a new GUI standard for cell phones. Its like the second coming of MacOS but on the cell phones, other cell phones now run DOS and iPhone really got a GUI, a real GUI, the way it should be, but behind this phone years of development, thousands of people and the work of the whole Apple team.
