I placed an order for the 2.0Ghz MBP on April 7th. The first machine I received was DOA. I finally received a replacement on April 25th. While the second machine was not DOA it did exhibit many of the issues of the first including excessive heat and buzzing.

The first machine I received was a W8614 and the second was a W8616. Build Week 14 and 16 respectively.

These were both CTO orders with 7200 rpm drives. I am extremely disappointed with the problems the machines have exhibited despite their excellent performance.

The upside of all this is that Apple customer service has been a dream to deal with. The 1st machine was declared DOA and a replacement was setup. I held on to the second machine for a week (which is today) and finally called Apple. They did not even mention a restocking fee but immediately said that a return label would be sent out a full credit would be issued.

The ease of returning this CTO machine was pleasing but also got me wondering. Apple has usually been very strict about their CTO return policy. Usually choosing to repair the machine instead. To me this only indicates that their is an endemic problem with the MBP hardware.

The down side to all of this is that I will be without a computer. I sold my Thinkpad T40 and my Dell desktop to switch to Apple. Although I do not regret getting rid of my other machines I am now in limbo. The only thing that I can do is place a new order and pray that there is no problem. At least by placing a new order I will be back to square one. I have a full backup.

Any thoughts from the community as to what I should do.

buy a 17" macbook pro, which presumably should have all these defects resolved. If not, just keep returning it until you receive one you like

I'm getting a mbp through a friend who works at an apple store (yay employee discount!) but I just keep crossing my fingers that I get a macbook that doesn't exhibit all these problems.

This is why I'm waiting until August to buy my 17." Also because my school gets an additional $200-$300 off even Apple's education prices. And hopefully there'll be a Merom-based 17" by then.

Daniel.

Sounds like Apple is acknowledging it silently that there are issues and being reported by many. Probably to not get anyone angry who has a problematic MBP they are taking them back or replacing them at the user's choice. Just wondering why iGary can't get this kind of service from Applecare when his PM G5 is clearly faltering. But that's in another thread.

I would get the 17inch which supposed to have all these problems fixed or just keep trying to get a problem free 15 inch. Mac OS X is a great user experience which makes everything much simple, so definitely worth it.

Unfortunately the 17" is not an option for me as I actually need to travel quite often with my machine. I travel from Toronto to Europe and Russia on a monthly basis and lugging around a 17" is not an option.

Secondly no one has actually received the 17" machine as yet. They were supposed to have them in the stores on May 1st but did not receive them as yet. Most online shipping dates are May 8th. There is no evidence weather the 17" is without problems as yet.

Most likely I will place a new order the day my machine ships back and a credit is issued to my Visa.

Interested in a potential trade for the Macs in my sig? I'd be willing to deal with the issues related to getting that computer fixed if you wanted a couple that are guaranteed to be working right ;)

That's a positive way to look at it. The only problem is that it still won't guarantee that you receive a machine without these problems. But at least you will get a healthy discount and a full warranty to boot.
