I'm stupid (scratched Cinema Display)

I've just bought a second hand ACD 20" screen. It's great. I've scratched it. That's not great. Luckily it's not so bad, a couple of marks at the top right hand corner where my curtain rail fell on to it during the night. Anything i can buy / do? Cleaning cloths don't work, is iKlear any use to me? Bear in mind i can physically feel these scratches with my finger.
 
well, i don't think you can do much for it.. sorry to hear what happened.. how did you scratch it in the first place? :confused:

it lives near my window & my curtains fell down last night. the rail or an eyelet must have hit the screen. luckily it looks like it only lightly grazed it or i could have had a hole in the monitor. My fault, i knew the rail wasn't as secure as it should have been, just never got round to fixing it. Grr.

He would know after ther horrible experience he had with the ACDS!:p
I have problems with the iMac, bear with me.

oh crap, he signed an agreement with apple never to speak of that again because it will ruin their "good" rep.
 
it'd be nice if it was just the casing, but this is the screen itself that's scratched.:(

Can you post a photo of the scratch? And just so you know, imacintel, a screenshot won't help. :)
 
i think you should just be thankful it's not toooo terrible.. unfortunately, since you can actually *feel* the scratch, there's probably nothing you can do to fix it. that sucks, though :(
 
I Used Brasso to Fix my Nano scratches. It might help with this.
Use a VERY Soft polishing cloth to gently rub the brasso over the area.
It will take allot of rubbing to get a deep scratch out & you may never get the whole thing out but you can lessen it alot.

eeeeee.... Brasso works great on the plastic of an iPod, but i'm not so sure about using it on an LCD. I'm pretty sure that it wouldn't be a good match...

If you live in the UK (not sure about in USA), there is a product called tee cut. It takes scratches out of cars and almost any metal thing. I scatched my speakers really badly and it helped loads that i can now barely see them, i have to squint.
 
In america, the same type product is called "Scratch Out" by Kit.

If you remove the LCD panel from the case, and clean/polish the entire thing evenly, the scratch will come out evenly and the entire screen will be even. As a plan B, you might want to just purchase an aftermarket LCD coating - some of the anti-glare plastic sheets are pretty good.

Then, put the case back on and it'll be like new. I think. It might not work, and the harst chemicals in the Scratch Out may destroy the plastic, or the coat may get bubbles, or you might get a ticket for using a LCD coating in a manner not approved by the FDA, or you may choke on a nut...

So, test on your GF's LCD first ;)

Couldnt really take a clear picture. as i said, its only minimal but it annoys me and is worse if i'm watching a film / music video with a white background. Black backgrounds tend to show the scratches up less. Dont think its worth taking the panel out somehow...
 
One of the things I do at work is to "refurbish" digital cameras. When the LCDs are scratched, we use auto polisher to completely eliminate them (you'd be surprised at the excellent results we get). If the scratch is not too deep, you should have no problem. It's worth a try. :)
 
I've never tried to repair scratches on an LCD monitor, but I have used this (http://www.janvil.com/plastic_polish.htm) to refurbish a used G4 Cube. The acrylic had some minor to deep scratches and this product worked really well. I was able to buff out most of the scratches with a little elbow grease.

The site claims that this product will work on LCD screens but again, I've never done that myself. Also, you might buff away some of the anti-glare coating so you want to keep that in mind.

I had accidently scratched the screen on my MBP, and I tried what I thought was a really stupid idea -- Vaseline. I put some on a q-tip, then gently wiped the excess with a microfiber cloth. It didn't really remove it but it did hide it for the most part. I can barely see it now.
 
I'm telling you to try toothpaste, and by paste I mean the white variety that is abrasive and not some gel type. If you have some already you may be able to reduce your scratches and not have to buy some sort of polish, and if you are out of toothpaste or do not brush your teeth then it's only set you back maybe $1.50.

We use a product sold here with the brand "auto polish" its a white liquid used to remove scratches from cars. You probably have something similar in the US (I believe there's one that's a little light blue in color)... you just apply a tiny bit of the "paste" (it's neither completely liquid nor it is a paste :) ) in little cotton, and just buff the whole screen, trying to apply the same pressure in the whole screen so that every part is treated equally.

Please ask me if you have any more doubts, results are really amazing :D :cool:
