better get a really long ethernet cable, it has no local storage.

You would have to have some sort of wireless data card to rent movies, and i'm guessing your quality wouldn't be that good or it would take forever to buffer, and you'd hit your data limits pretty quickly.

or also put some sort of computer in the car running itunes to stream the library from, which at that point, why put the :apple:tv in the car?

This is one of the least thought out ideas i've seen here in a while.

How about using Airplay to push movies to car ATV from iphone using mywi?

Be creative peoples:rolleyes:

(edited, as no need to single-out anyone).

7.2Mbps using iPhone with 3Mbps (AT&T, 5Mbps Rogers Wireless & many others) ... is more than sufficient - same with 3G+WIFI iPad; if there is an app that'll stream.

- but you'll be limited to 16/32/64GB - iPad the latter - of video/audio content. Still its feasible. Also you can use a laptop with a seriously fast Rocketstick to do the video streaming data with a much larger HDD. I'm still curious why AppleTV 2nd gen still has a USB connection - if no data is stored locally and all content is streamed??

7.2 Mbps speeds are purely theoretical. They assume you are living under a BTS/BSC, soooooooo your "more than sufficient" statement is bogus.

Yes, it was really just food for thought and to get feedback from the expertise here. Have all your 23.000 posts been so insightful?

Thanks!

PS. I'm just looking to stream music from my handheld device, video and internet would be icing.

just plug it in, there are cigarette lighter adapters that have an audio out on the plug part, so you only have one cable coming out of the ipod/iphone.
you're making things way too complicated.

...I don't want cables! I want streaming music. +?

IMHO I think for $99. this may be a great application for the device. Hack it and the sky will be the limit.

This is quite doable....and Ive thought about it myself.

Although my problem is that I dont have an HDMI input on my lcd in my car. Its just components...

Doing this though you wouldnt HAVE to have internet. Simply a laptop would suffice or even a mac mini put into the car. You just need something (a computer) to stream from. And this would give you access to your library on the go.

If you have a hacked iphone, or use netshare/handylight then you can use your cell inet, and connect your laptop and have access to new content over the net. Or use mifi device...

I was talking about your handheld device, not the appletv,
no need to add the extra gear, just get a cigarette lighter adapter, plug in your ipod/iphone, and you already have a much more friendly interface, and less gear to worry about troubleshooting when you should be paying attention to the road.

OK, while driving alone I like my Iphone with earbuds for calls, preferable with the phone in my pocket this makes frequent in and out of the car less troublesome (my problem) hence the desire to stream from my IPhone without Bluetooth OEM. I do not text or hold a phone while driving. If the options were available to stream video or the handhelds screen image I might hack the GM OEM nav system front monitor to operate while moving so the front passenger could use it on trips. I also would need a HDMI to composite adaptor for video transfer to onboard sys. Pretty sure that's available. The Ipad screen is obviously a better visual option but holding it or rack & storage issues arise plus when stopped the nav screen is centered and a better option for viewing by both front seat occupants. I really haven't heard anything yet that is a deal killer. Jess?

Far too complicated a solution. You say you don't hold a phone while driving--how are you going to play music, start streaming using AirPlay without looking at/holding your phone?

And for someone who gives the impression of being concerned with safety while driving ("I do not text or hold a phone while driving", real smart move driving with headphones on--I believe this illegal in most states. Same goes with playing video on the front nav screen--there's a reason why a hack is required to get it to do that.

If you're concerned with getting video/music to your rear LCD screen, there are far easier ways to get the job done. For example, I have my old iPhone loaded up with videos for the kids and connected via the composite connections included with all rear entertainment systems. It's only 32 GB but that's plenty to hold 15-20 movies. If you really want to carry around a larger library, pick up a refurb iPod classic.

And forget about getting the handheld's screen image via AirPlay--not going happen unless someone creates a jailbroken app for it.

Not necessarily bogus.
Network, Area, level of Congestion, and finally implementation of the radio stack in use ALL affect data throughput.

1. Rogers Wireless (where I'm located)
2.& 3. In Toronto just about anywhere I go I have HSPA connection, seldomly dropping to 3G/UMTS or EDGE (basements/elevators/underground parking/subways excluded). Our population in this city, or country - vs New York/Los Angeles or USA is by a large margin smaller; I don't have network congestion and haven't since Rogers went to GPRS/EDGE some 9-10yrs ago. I also had the priviledge to test that migration (means squat now) and still have a few insiders and I can tell you AT&T's implementation of their network vs Rogers is like Night vs Day.

Yes 7.2Mbps down is theoretical but often enough 3-4.5Mbps is NOT uncommon for smarpthone users across this city day in/out and is PLENTY for Video Streaming according the the largest specs of video/audio streaming supported by iPhone 4. I'm not just reading a spec sheet.

Until apple does apps on the new apple tv, i think the best in car solution, if you want apple products, would be the 1st gen appletv. You don't have to worry about a constant internet connection, you can sync your music and some video to it when you get home.

legal/smart?

Ya I'm not interested inthat as I have all that already, as I said I really am looking for a streaming music solution.

It is controlled by the little speaker button on the earbud and or voice command, which is legal in Oregon! And imho with a little self restaint the best option for "me".

The nav monitor hack for viewing while in motion certainly requires self restraint on the part of the driver and that function should not be implemented without serious consideration, I agree.

I've thought several times about putting one of our 1st gen Apple TV's in the car, but as hot as it gets (both the Apple TV and the car), I don't know if that's the best idea.

It's about the IPhone voice recognition/command access with music wirelessly people!

What's wrong with iPad 3G in the car?

I get in and out often so racking/storage/
security make that less appealing than streaming from IPhone, one key feature I would like to have is music dim with incoming call and voice command. I guess that is two.

I like to fiddle with stuff, but I have a JVC KW-NT3HDT NAV/ HANDSFREE/ BLUETOOTH WITH USB. It connests to my iphone via BT. I have tunes, phone and contacts on the touchscreen. Incoming phone on bluetooth speaker overides music. Additionally, I have a nano hooked up with more inventory via usb.

Iphone automatically recognized EVERYTIME i get in the car. 24Gig total available.

NOT BETTER...JUST EASIER
