Yes, we know that— they’re only doing it to justify not putting all the Face ID gear and camera below the display. When they can produce massive quantities of phones with under display tech, they’ll drop it. But it’s actually a pretty damn good justification for the cutout. Remember, we just had an immovable notch for 5 years. Never bothered me but lots of other people hated it.
Apparently people don't, just look at the OP and other threads going gaga over this feature...

So what? I still think it’s a cool solution to an obvious hardware and economies of scale problem.

If they “solve it” with the iPhone 15 Ultra having completely under the display tech, yes, people will be pissed. If they take 2-3 more years to solve it, people will accept and find something else to complain about.

Like it or not, it’s a necessary step for them obviously. If they could have put all the tech under the display right now, they would have. They just can’t do it at scale.

You are suckers for believing in a marketing feature, that's what.

Apple has made this into a marketing problem, there is no need for a notch, they could have left it in the bezel out of the positon of the screen. This is another marketing ploy to generate interest in the product. Well done you fell for it again.

You have some insider source or knowledge if Apple could do it now they would?

You do realize that if they put all that stuff in the bezel it would be half an inch thick, right? Then we’d all be walking around with iPhones that look like they’re from 2011.

No insider knowledge just a long history of following the supply chain and knowledge of what it takes every year to produce these devices at such scale.

Everything involves marketing. I respect them for telling a good story on how this actually solves a problem, while being quite an interesting and fun UI/UX feature. Yes, they could have left it in the bezel. But I'd rather have this than a thick bezel from the iPhone 8 era.

Maybe once we're all bored with edge-to-edge screens, we'll like bezels again, and the cycle repeats.

Why does it have to be about right or wrong, or being suckers for believing this narrative. People will like what they like, and some will even pay money for what they like. That's life and business.

Dynamic Island has been a good user-experience for me. It is the little things it does that make it useful. And, while I thought it would be no different than the notch from previous iPhones, it does look better, in my visual opinion.

I too barely use it. My biggest gripe with the island is that is sits lower (about 1/4 inch) than the notch. Very noticeable when watching videos and zooming into photos. There's more wasted space overall than the notch, if you include the area above the island that is not useful at all.

They could have easily worked around the notch to do very similar animations and call it dynamic notch.

I like Dynamic Island.

I'm the type that likes to hear a part of a music track several times. Scrubbing audio is convenient and super easy on Dynamic Island.

I use hotspot a lot. The icon is very helpful in letting me know a connection status.

I also use the timer a lot, and love the way it's implemented on Dynamic Island.

I really like the Face ID animation, even though it's only eye candy.

Looking forward to Live Activities in the upcoming update.

Or they could have just made the notch even smaller. But it’s an iterative approach to putting the cameras below the display.

It's been an adjustment for me as well, I have to swipe from right for control center, and left for notifications. I liked center for notifications it was easier, lol.
But officially, it was always swipe right for control centre, and swipe left for notifications. That's what it always officially was. Swiping from the centre was presumably just a way to make sure you swiped and something happened, but now Apple is clearly enforcing the original conventions. Don't have 14PM yet, still coming.

I'm using it far more than I expected. I love it, especially while driving. The only thing that doesn't seem to work very well with it is phone calls and getting back to phone calls from other apps. Seems to be broken or something.

I’m not sure it will. Apple’s put a lot of effort into this.

Touch Bar failed because it replaced a much more useful function row of keys. So it was bound to get a lot of hate. The Island doesn’t have this issue. It has the potential to be truly useful, and doesn’t take anything away.
Doesn’t take anything way? It’s literally a hole in your screen.

Although I’m using it and interacting with it more and more, I do have mixed feelings about it. On one hand, it is much more useful than a notch. On the other, it actually results in less useable screen space (less than my 12 Pro Max’s notch anyway), especially when watching movies.

Since it’s an iterative move to eventually get the FaceID And camera under the screen, it will be interesting to see what Apple does once they no longer need the Dynamic Island.

Apple was unable to figure out an elegant solution for the messed-up camera area, so they started calling it "Dynamic Island" and touted it as a feature. Brilliant. That is why it is a 3 trillion dollar company and all of us keep throwing money at them.

Dynamic Island is just at the beginning... it will become ubiquitous in the 15 when it makes its way to the non pro models.... it will then hang around in its present form until the technology advances far enough for the front facing camera and faceID hardware to be under screen.... only then will it disappear.

However I really like the Touch Bar on the MacBooks and I for one think its a huge shame they seem to have abandoned it now.

I had a 13pm and worked great and upgraded to 14pm because I buy and sell my phones outright so it was not a big amount.

Regaring dynamic island I like it but it’s not a huge deal. I use it when I’m in the car mostly and the animations are very nice plus it makes it easy to multitask versus the old way. It tends to be one less click or more which is what makes it good for me.

The 14 promax has been a slight upgrade, but I turned off always on display, and my battery has been close to my 13 promax. I have started using Siri as well and works great.

All and all I am happy, even though it is not a huge jump

The only thing that bothers me about it is how it makes it a bit harder to swipe down to see notifications. If I don't get the finger placement right, I end up hitting the dynamic island and can't pull down to see notifications. It can be somewhat frustrating but i'm trying to get used to swiping down from the left corner instead of swiping down the center.. 🤷‍♂️
You might try Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Back Tap as an alternative. You can set it to 2 or 3 taps. I've got mine at 3 taps and it works great.

Why do people think Dynamic Island will disappear if cameras go under the screen? 16.1 is introducing a new API with Live Activities, if DI disappears in the future, where does the info from a Live Activity get displayed when your iPhone is unlocked?

umm... Lock Screen info isn't it... so in the lock screen.

I assume you aren't suggesting that when the cameras inevitably disappear they aren't going to put a big black cutout on the screen just for fun.

iPhone is due for an extra button, closer to our fingers on left/right side. Or both. Imagine if something like Action button from the Watch Ultra gets added to the phone, as a customizable function button.

We can use it as another input path, shortcuts, or even to trigger reachability.
It was called the home button with Touch ID.

Eventually, I believe it will go away— that’s inevitable. But I find it pretty useful.

I like it, I think it kind of does the job of the menu bar in macOS or the taskbar in Windows, I mean, a very easy and rudimental version, but still. I think it will evolve and is here to stay, with new features added just like the menu bar. We might be able to set the transparency, its position and features, but I think it will stay.
