the spec of the iPhone is already out of date with no GPS, 5mp camera, 3g or HSDPA.

So... by the time it gets to the UK it will be really out of date.

Come on Apple pull your socks up, it may have really good software and touch screen but they dont make up for the features that matter.

what are you talking about 5MP? and 2gb? its already confirmed at 4gb and 8 gb and 2MP..what? huh? im so confused right now:confused:

I think he means second generation iPhone.

Once again it comes down to the "I have no real intention of buying any current apple product, so I'm waiting for the next Rev"

The latest camera phones are 5 Mega Pixels, and the OP says 2g (second generation) rather than 2gb (Giga Bytes). Personally I'd require 3G data before picking one up.

well my current phone has a 3mp camera and i use it more than i expected i would, i use the 3g part of my phone connected to my macbook pro to get fast internet when out.

so although i love apple products and love the idea it would be a step down for me.

i am gonna go for a Nokia N95 then if the iPhone is better i will get the 2g one.

2g = second generation
5mp = five megapixels

It's a well known fact that the quality of a digital camera is measured entirely in megapixels and that image quality improves the more of the things you squeeze onto a tiny little noisy chip.

As for GPS - can't say I've ever used it. The iPhone is an improvement on everything in my current phone and my contract expires at christmas so I certainly have no complaints about the current spec.

In other news I think that I might wait for the next gen of Aston Martin before buying, with current fuel prices they really need to make the car more economical or make it run on air - most current cars use petrol already, I expect more of Aston than simply re-hashing current combustion engine technology.

Good for you!! Why this news is worth of a thread, but not really sure but what the heck!!

I'm planning on buying one when it launched! Maybe I should go makea thread about that!

i just thought i might discuss my view on how the iPhone will be REALLY out dated by the time it comes to UK

makes sense...however maybe Apple will give you guys a 3G model sooner...from what I understand 3G is far more popular there, so makes for sense for you guys to get it first

The buttons on my current windows smart phone are starting to stick, i want a iphone i will have the money sitting in the bank for it but as a allways connected person i feel that without 3g the iphone is lacking the one thing that would put it head and sholders above the rest.

Err. No, that is not a well-known fact. What's a well-known fact is that once your each a comfortable Mpx (2.0 qualifies) it's all up to the optics and image processing. I have an 8Mp Sony Cybershot (got it for free) that takes crappier pictures than my 4-year-old 2 Mpx Canon. White balance is terrible, there's all sorts of artifacts, the focus is off most of the time. With such disappointing images, it wouldn't matter if they were 20 Mpx.

I'm not saying iPhone's image quality will be awesome; it might be, it might not. But hanging the decision on the Mpx is really silly.

Apple will provide a 3G iPhone in the UK before it's available in the US? I very much doubt that, however, if that does turn out to be true, I'm not arguing.

Actually, what's to say Apple haven't quietly upped the spec of the iPhone due to the huge amount of international interest? We'll find out pretty soon I s'pose.

I think that you missed some sarcasm in his post.

A question: how fast is 3G compared to what the iPhone will have? Can I get a number measured in KB? Like an old 28.8 modem would download at about 2.8K?

I mean, am I gonna have to wait three minutes for the front page of Macrumors to finish loading?

EDGE is practically in the high 100s or low 200s of kilobits per second; HSDPA and other 3G data standards are typically in the 1-3 megabits per second range, so it's a factor of approximately 10 in (edit) theoretical speed. I think at the very worst, it's maybe slightly worse in magnitude than the speed difference between relatively bad DSL and moderately good cable internet. I don't know how big the difference is in practice. If you can imagine using DSL to view a website, I don't think the iPhone should be dramatically worse.

Okay, so it won't be lightning fast but should be good enough for normal browsing. How about streaming? Sounds like you said about 15-20KB per second which should be plenty for audio but how about video? Maybe the "small" trailers on the Apple website? Heck, does the iPhone have the power to do that? (not even considering the software, is enough "oomph" available?)

I'm not touching one till rev.b minimum.

I'm not going to gamble on battery life... and truthfully I dont want to rely on a 3rd party how to on installing a new one on a early build. Apple will either hit a homerun or fail here. Hopefully the kill it and smack it out of the park.

Time will tell... and as for music I have this cool thing called an iPod that work pretty good.

I'm gonna wait until they recall these first ones with something like terrible battery life or "oops", no multi touch functionality. Meh, not many people get it right the first time especially something of this scale with so much technology packed into such a tiny package. Remember the first time they packed the iMac G5 into that tiny case?

Also, would you buy it if Cingular one day just said, "We're gonna start making computers."

Realistically, downloading a song, a small trailer, etc, is going to take a couple of minutes at EDGE speeds, I think. I think, if you practically got 200 kbps, then a 4 MB iTunes file (typical size of a song?) would take you about 2.6 minutes to download (4 mB *1000 kB/mB * 8 b/B / 200 kbps / 60 s/min = 2.67 minutes). There's more real-world perspective here:

http://rickmahn.com/2006/09/01/real-world-edge-speeds-at-our-new-place/

(Just something I found by Googling).

For most non-streaming surfing of static web pages, it should be very usable. It should be more than fine for mobile designed video content and low bandwidth streaming (like Youtube), too.

How do you "connect" your phone to your MBP to get internet?
Does it require a data plan?

This sounds like a newbie question (i'm actually semi-tech savvy) but how would you do that?

Is there ANY way to connect a phone or PDA through bluetooth or something to get internet from the MBP to the phone/PDA?

We don't have EDGE and 2.5G will not cut it for some of the features of the iPhone AFAIK so they'll have to offer the UK another option which could easily be 3G.
Also, not having a 5MP camera makes it outdated?
How many people are buying it for a camera? The price will be high enough already. :)
