Here's the story: I received my 2.2 Matte MBP a little over a week ago and everything has been running smoothly until yesterday. Yesterday i was simply listening to itunes and browsing around on safari and chatting in ichat when my computer froze and wouldnt do anything. i tried force quit but nothing hapenned so after waiting a few minutes of hoping it would fix i just held the power button down and restarted. worked fine after that. today i was listening to itunes and playing poker online when (after about 2 hours -i know, i need a life) it froze again. but this time the entire computer didnt freeze, it was just itunes. itunes was minimized and still playing music but i couldnt open it up or anything. safari still worked at this time. i tried force quit but it didnt work so i tried all kinds of other things but nothing was happening. then i hit apple shut down and still nothing happened. so since safari was still working i sort of googled wat to do and it said type in top to terminal and manually force quit it that way. when i did all that the force quit screen appeared, along with itunes, the shut down in XX time screen and everything else i tried to use. im a complete noob to apple and im no computer genious but i feel like a week old computer shouldt be freezing. especially when im not doing much but browsing, itunes and chatting.

oh btw, the only things ive installed are the new ilife, about 300 songs from cd's, and firefox. and i have all updates.

should i not be worried at all that my new computer is doing this? or can someone say something or help me in any way?? thank you!!! this forum is awesome btw, ive gotten so much help already.

Well, that's not normal, but at first read it sounds more like a software issue. Sometimes the initial installation of OS X from the factory just isn't quite right. This early in the game, I would suggest trying a fresh installation of OS X and then seeing if the problem persists. If so, there are some other things to try in more depth.

My advice would be the same as above in this situation.

And may I suggest that you use Camino instead of firefox :)

IMHO it runs ALOT better :D

I agree. I've using Camino for a while now, and I just love it. IMO the "Find in Page" feature should be improved though. Add real-time finding, and I'll be a happy surfer...

To the OP, are you sure it wasnt over heating? were you using it on a table? or something a bit less desirable?

I had a very similar thing happen on my new MBP -- but for me it happened only when I was using Firefox. The screen & cursor would just freeze and I would have no choice but to reboot.

I took it to the Genius bar. They reinstalled the OS. I also stopped using Firefox about that time (I switched to Safari instead when the beta 3 came out) and I haven't had the problem happen again.

Thanks for all the replies.

-I was using safari when it froze and i only use firefox when something does not work in safari.
-i guess it could be heat but it was sitting on a flat table the entire time so it had plenty (or at least normal) ventilation.

-i guess i could/should reinstall os x but its gonna be a hassle getting all of my cd's imported again. or is there a way to do it where i dont have to re-improt them?

Thank You!

As in your music CD's?

Any music you import is stored in Home --> Music --> iTunes Music. Just copy that to an external hard drive or something. Alternatively, you could do an archive and install which will preserve all your data.

Do not use Firefox on Mac unless you really need to. It is a memory hog. Use Safari 3 Beta or Camino instead.

-yes, my music cd's. i have no external hard drive, how do i archive them?

-thanks. Good bye firefox, hello safari 3

When you are reinstalling OSX, you get the option to do a complete wipe and install or you can do an archive and install.

An archive and install just reinstalls all the system files and core operating system stuff, while leaving your user data intact. You might have to reinstall some programs, but other than that your music and documents will still be there.

When you boot up from the installer cd and it asks you what type of install you want, select an archive and install. This will take all the data you have now and put it in a "previous system folder". There, you just pull out the files you need and delete the rest.

If you're having software problems it might be in your better interest to a full re-install, meaning completely wipe the drive and start all over again. Archive and install isn't known for giving the best results.

Apple do say that an Archive and Install will mean that not all 3rd party applications will work without being reinstalled again.

Generally, any application that came as a stand alone file as opposed to an installer (.pkg file) will work fine after an Archive and Install.

ok, re-installation of os x is complete! My music and everything is still here and all i have left to do is reinstall iLife '08. So, my question now: is it ok to delete my "previous system" folder? its taking up 10gb of space and all it is is a copy of what was previously on here (right?) And to delete it i just drag it to the trash can and empty and thats all correct? thanks!
and i'll just have to wait and see if anymore freezing occurs...i hope it doesnt.

You may also want to run the disk utility under apps and then utilities; run the repair disk permissions. Also run the disk error check as well.
