I am trying to upgrade imovies but am being told that I have to upgrade operating system.
I have sierra and am unable to download a later version.

I followed another thread with a similar problem and each of the options and links given resulted in a message saying “the version could not be downloaded to this computer"

Is it so that my computer is now a dinosaur or is there still hope : )

Hi
I think that even if You accomplished to get a newer version of iMovie running in your iMac, it would be useless, since i think the later version You want to run needs metal support from the gpu which your imac lacks (that is why You can't upgrade your macOS version.

A couple months ago i installed Mojave on My unsupported imac using dosdudes patches and iMovie was useless for what i am telling You, even Photos app didnt work.

You could look for the 2011 imac graphics Card upgrade thread if You wanna keep your imac a bit longer, But i tell in advance that is pretty challenging.

There is no hope with this level of information you share.
