iMac 19,1 won't shutdown or restart

So since upgrading to Catalina, my iMac will not restart or shutdown using the normal means through the Apple in the upper left. If I logout and then choose one of those options, I don't have any issues. Any ideas before I try a fresh reinstall of Catalina?

My guess is that you have some application (or process) running in the background that won't "quit" (when the OS requests that it quit) when you call for a shutdown.

Apparently when you log out, this DOES coax that app/process into quitting, then the OS can shutdown normally.

If this is "account-related", be mindful that the problem may persist even after installing a fresh copy of the OS.

Logs aren't my strong point, but is there some kind of "shutdown log" that can be reviewed?
It might reveal what's "hanging up" and preventing the OS from shutting down.
