Imac 20" Airport Prob

Hiya,

I've seached for this problem, and found hundreds of posts, however cant seem to find anyone who has said for certain about a fix for it.

In our house we have a Powermac, a Mini, and a Ibook, and never had any probs with the airport or the signal.

I'm now the (not so proud) owner of a brand new 20" Imac, delivered friday...

Its dropped connection about 10 times in less than 10 hours.. :-(

I play alot of online games, and its wrecking gameplay..

can anyone advise whether i should just ship it back to apple or is there some simple fix that i've not seen?

First run all the latest updates. I'm sure there was some kind of airport fix in there somewhere. Failing that call Apple.

try turning on interference robustness and playing around with the settings a little bit too, just may need a little bit of fine tuning.

It's quite possible that there's a manufacturing defect (i.e. the cable connecting the antenna to the wireless card is loose).

However, in the meantime...

1) Is your iMac in a different part of the home than the rest? Is it near a microwave oven, a cordless landline telephone, bluetooth devices, etc?

2) Have you tried changing the channel on your router?

There was an Airport update in the latest OS X update (10.4.7). On my 20" iMac (but not my PowerBook) I had to do the "Airport has been updated, can it access your keychain..." deal when I restarted after the update. Of course I didn't have any airport problems before the update, and didn't notice any difference, but obviously some people were having a problem with something or they wouldn't have updated it.

Cheers for all of your help, we have enabled interface robustness and it appears to have largely resolve the problem and does not disconnect every 15 to 20 minutes.

Ok, well I had a nice happy wireless connection... until I installed the 10.4.7 update. Now I ain't got sh*t.

No wireless connection. Occasionally my iMac will momentarily discover my wireless network, but as soon as I try to connect, my iMac looses it again.

I tried fiddling with the settings, changing channel etc, even renaming my home network, and trying to connect to that. But, no dice.

About 6 months ago I had some problems with Airport, but an update seemed to fix all that. It seems that this latest update screwed it up again.

And now my iMac has no internet. Brilliant. These were the kind of problems I left Windows to avoid.

Any ideas?

well since this has helped, i'd also look to see what is around either your router or your iMac that could be causing the interference if the problem arisies again. any cordless phones can cause problems or microwaves too tend to be a big culprit.

Possibly a Defect

Hi,

I just had my Intel iMac in the shop for a new hardrive, which just plain died, and the techy spotted a screen flaw so he replaced that as well. When I got the compy back home again, my airport reception was shot: sporadic but tending towards nil. Another computer right beside it registered perfect signal reception, which I had always had. I don't know if the techy who worked on my compy dinged it up the first time he had it, but he claims to have had some sort of funky experience with iMacs and their reception. He swapped out the airport card and it made no difference, so he's ordered a new antenna.

FYI, if you have trouble with CDs not being ejected, just squeeze the case to make sure it's properly aligned. That's all it took to fix mine.

Just another quick update that the interface robustness has completely resolved the problem, I was playing WoW for hours and hours and there has been no dropped connection what so ever.
