iMac 20 and 24 display differences

About to buy a new iMac, and want to buy right.

I read elsewhere (http://www.silvermac.com/2007/imac-colours-washed-out/) that the 20 has problems the 24 doesn't...

The reason for this is that Apple has used TN displays, which are the low end displays and are very cheap. 24 inch model comes with IPS displays, just like the old 20 and 24 inch white iMacs, and they are perfectly fine.

I was pretty sure to buy a 20" imac soon... until now. Didn't know the difference was that bad.

Basically, every LCD screen uses some kind of panels, let's say, a kind of technology to get things displayed. The 20" and 24" imac use different ones, apparently, which causes the trouble.

Anyway, I think you should go out and look at both imacs, to decide for yourself if you can live with it. The step from 20 to 24 inch is "only" like 300 euros/dollars, which isn't too much considering that it's a HUGE difference in size, a nice difference in quality, and a rather small extra price compared to the total cost of your imac.

These things being said, I'm starting to considering to buy the 24" myself too.

My interest is to buyt he 24" iMac but I've also heard of problems with that one too, so I'll have to check them out in the store and see if I find any problems with them there.

Advice on iMac purchase

I just bought a 20" iMac at the end of last year and haven't had any trouble with the display, it is beautiful, though I have to close my blinds during the day to cut the glare on the glossy screen. My wife and I enjoy watching the TV we've missed on the iMac screen better than watching on our TV - less commercials too

That article is EXACTLY the reason why I bought a 24" back in november. Plus apple dropped the price for it by $200, and for just $300 more, god, much better, bigger screen, better quality, but the one thing that every single imac has no matter what is uneven backlighting.

How much do you care about color fidelity? Are you a serious photographer and using a color managed workflow? If so then you'd care about the type of display and you'd buy a hardware colorimeter to calibrate it. If you are a websurfer and casual snapshooter and don't know or care about what is a "color space" then you don't need to worry about the type of pannel. They all look good.

Color managment allows me and you and more importently your printing service to look at an image file and see _exactly_ the same colors on our screens and printers.

Even if you don't need the nicer pannel the larger size is nice to have. Windows, floating tool pallets and so on all don't have to be on top of each other.
