Hi Guys,

My parents own an iMac 20" 2.0GHZ Core Duo (4,1), they bought some more memory, but the iMac can't seem to address more then 2GB memory

Is there a firmware update that can allow more then 2GB? or are they stuck with that amount..

What happens if I install more then the 2GB is the system boots up but screen is blank. When I have 2GB or less it boots up fine..

Appreciate your feedback

Thanks

I'm pretty sure that model maxes out at 2 GB. Enter your model at crucial.com and they'll give you some details about your system, including the maximum amount of RAM it can handle.

yes 2 GB only, but you will only ever need more if you would run some programs which would need more ram if you run them on a professionel basis
like for example if you would run for making a living from it AVID or Final Cut Pro ,or if your parents are heavy gamers ,but then the iMac would anyway be the wrong choice
under normal usage , you wont ever feel the need for more ram ,i thought about upgrading to 2 gb on my one in my signature , but so far i dont feel its necessary ,and would be wasted money , as everything runs with only 1GB even photoshop and final cut , ok i only use these programs to do up some holiday pics and movies , otherwise the iMac is mainly used for web surfing and emailing and itunes and watching movies

if you really need more then just replace the internal HDD with a SSD,put the HDD then in a firewire enclosure for storing files and a backup partition sorted
