iMac 20" RAM Doesn't Fit?

Anyone else having a problem physically fitting third-party RAM into the second RAM bay?

I threw a 2 GB Crucial stick in there, pushing as firmly as possible, yet the screw-on panel won't screw on all the way. The memory is recognized by the system and my computer is flying, but the little panel is just hanging on by a thread (pun!).

Saw it for $40 a 1gb stick with a $10 rebate.

I took a 1 GB DDR2-533 SODIMM out of my PC laptop. Once I figured out the right way to orientate the RAM, I did have to make sure I was putting it in parallel to the slot. (at first, I was putting it in at an angle.)

Then, the RAM slot cover would only seem to stay on one way. YMMV.

This happened to me as well. First you have to make sure the RAM is properly seated i.e. giving it quite a push might require slight (not major) force. then wrap the black strip around it.

As for the RAM, i used three fingers when handling it. Two for the edged of the bar (one for each edge (thumb and middle finger)) and my index finger to push the screw in and screwed in simultaneously. Awkward but worked like a charm

You don't have the module fully seated in the socket. It's only partially in and you can expect trouble as it shifts

It takes both thumbs to push it in. The RAM module goes in about 1 inch and stops, you then have to push it 1/8" further to fully seat it in the connectors.

Different modules have slightly thicker PC boards, which make them harder to seat. Apple also uses a white lubricant grease on their modules to make installation easier.

I purchased 2 x 2GB sticks of GeIL RAM from Newegg.

After reading some posts I was hesitant that they would not fit because of their heat spreaders... after opening my new aluminum iMac and inserting them (and giving them a firm push) they fit snuggly inside and I was able to screw the hatch back on and no problems since

I had this happen to me when I was installing an additional 1gb from crucial. In my case, the little aluminium piece that coveres the ram slots became slightly bent, which prevented the screw from getting in all the way. Make sure the alumiuim piece is strait, otherwise you might have some trouble.
