iMac 20' Screen Issues Resolved?

I'm thinking about getting an iMac, and I've concluded that as much as I would like a 24', I really don't have the space for it. So that leaves me to choose between the old white and the new Aluminum 20' iMacs.

There hasn't been much recent dicussion on these boards about the 20's screen issues lately, other than a recent thread that suggests that many of the issues are actually due to poor factory calibration of the screen. Has Apple reduced this problem on more recently produced 20' iMacs? Was it never much of a problem? Or is it just that the screens continue to be of poor quality, and there is nothing new to add to the old discussion?

I was also thinking about getting the new imac 20" and/or the new macbook, so any insight on this problem would be great

I purchased my iMacs on Oct 5th. The screen gradient (lighter on bottom, darker on top) is visible but just barely and appears to be better than the earlier ones I had seen at resellers. The screens have a poor viewing angle and if you sit too close you can detect a very small colour shift on either end looking at the screen from the centre. I think Apple may have become more choosy with the screens. You will have to calibrate it as the default is a bit off.

Would it be better to get a computer from the online store or a bricks and mortar store (and thus pay sales tax), to ensure getting a more recently-produced computer? It would obviously be a fair amount cheaper to get it off Amazon, but I don't want to risk it, if that means I'll be getting an awful screen.

Ordered through Apple.ca/store and mine came straight from the factory in China.

I have had the aluminum 20 inch 2.0ghz with an upgrade to 2GB RAM for a week and it has edited photos, captured and rendered a rather large (22 min) video with edits and transitions and burned a great quality DVD of it flawlessly. No complaints here.
