Since the screen of the 20" imac is lower quality and has narrower viewing angle than the 24" will it have a shorter life span? Will I have to replace the 20" sooner than I would if I had the 24"?

IMHO, getting the 20" iMac doesn't even seem to be worth it. I mean yeah, sometimes money is the issue, but if it is, it almost seems like you'd get more in the long run to just wait that little extra bit for the money, so that you can value and appreciate a machine that will treat you a lot better.

Trust me, you'd be amazed by the difference!

IMHO, the screen isnt going to be the thing that determines the life of the iMac.

the 24" may look better, but my 20" is still the best looking screen in the house ;) (i have a macbook, and a 20" dell display, and a 14" HP display, 15.4" dell laptop display, 12" dell laptop display)

My opinion is that I don't think the 24" is worth the extra money for most people.
Use the money to load up on ram, and give the 20" a chance. It is a workhorse and will last just as long as a 24".

You can go on and on with the "wait till you have enough" excuse. Wait till you have enough for the 24", but then why not wait-save for the Mac Pro, then wait-save for the best and biggest monitor to go with it, then wait-save for the top of the line Mac Pro.

I agree, every step of the way...you WILL be amazed at the difference!
