Why? Because there were no other MXM video cards made that fit the 2006 Imac. Apple decided to go to discrete (soldered on) graphics chips with the nvidia 9400m.

anyway, nvidia 9400 is used only in newest low-end iMac! All other have some kind of MXM card (ATI and nvidia have different standards for "laptop" aka MXM graphics card so I suppose that I can not use ATI card for sure, maybe 8800GS from 24" Alu. iMac 2007.)...
