It has become a fairly openly discussed problem recently, that it is more or less proved through repeated attempts and repeated communications, that the OWC NuRAM (although it physically appears to comply with specifications supplied by Apple) simply will *NOT* work properly in the 2010 iMac range with the 4x4GB (16GB) configuration.

Those of us who have tried it are plagued almost immediately with random, spontaneous shutdowns.

The problem is solved simply by stepping down to 12GB of NuRAM, or trading the NuRAM for the better OWC RAM or the Samsung memory sold by OWC.

But here's the hilarious thing, the thing you're not going to believe:

Apple has started looking up the phone numbers of people who have complained about this issue...and they are just out of the blue cold calling them to see if there is anything they need to do.

So far two of us at the Apple Support forums have been called out of the blue to see what can be done.

Nothing needs to be done for me, because I have already gone with Samsung and given back the NuRAM, and stepped down to 12GB just to be safe. :)

But the other guy who is still having the problem has just been offered a remedy by Apple and given a case number.

Can you freaking, bloody believe that in 2010 in America, we are dealing with a company that will still go that very far out of its way with proactive solutions to issues like that?

I'm telling you...I think I'm sold for life. :)

This seems to be standard procedure for Apple. Some time ago I had my old iMac repaired by an Apple Service Provider. A week or so after the work had been completed, I received an email from Apple asking if I was satisfied with the work carried out etc.

I have always found Apple's after-sales service to be second to none.

I agree that Apples after sales are great. Much better than most other huge organizations. But i was put off a bit when I had to argue with a store manager to get a refund on a less than 24 hour old iMac. (The iMac had a faulty screen. Even though he didnt admit there was a fault i was still entitled to a refund when its less than 24hrs old).

I didnt just have to be persistent. I really had to argue and phone Apple care making a scene in the store.

Other than this one issue the general customer service is great.

I'm converted for life.
I had a 17" MBP's logic board replace for free by Apple even though it was 2 months out of warranty. I didn't even have Apple Care!
I love the customer care provided by Apple.

That's weird. I've been having the same problems (beachball, shutting down unexpectedly), called OWC, and they said it was the SAMSUNG ram they had installed for me. They sent me Apple ram, which I just installed. We'll see if that takes care of it. I sure don't want to have to go down to 12 GB! That sounds terrible I guess, but I bought this computer expecting to be able to use it with 16 GB to make it last a while.

So either the lady told me the brand incorrectly, or Samsung is on the bugaboo list for RAM too.
