Hi! I am looking to put some RAM in my 21.5" 2011 iMac. Looking to reuse the RAM in a newer Mac some years in the future.

Current RAM config is 2+2+2+2 = 8GB. Xcode manages to eat so much in Yosemite, the RAM's used with just 1 project  Need to fed more RAM now.

So which RAM specs could I go for the iMac? What parameters can I overlook and what need to be precise?

The memory specs according to Apple for the 21.5" 2011 iMac are:
SO-DIMM
PC3-10600
DDR3-1333MHz

So could I go for specs like these, maybe I could reuse the RAM in a newer system then?

SO-DIMM
PC3-12800
DDR3-1600MHz

You have my machine. That means your machine came with 4GB DDR3 1333mhz PC3 10600 CL9 (2+2+2+24) non ECC, non buff, non registered so-dimm Ram.

Your iMac can go up to 32GB if you need that much (8GB x4). Gamers only need 8GB but stupid and lazy power users who adore multitasking and are too thick to back out and close apps & files (like me, cough, cough) need a minimum 16-20gb Ram.

Ram is cheap. Patriot 16GB kit at Frys goes for $89.00 (8gbx2)
