I recently got the chance to buy a 27" iMac 2011 for what I think was a great price £200. I was planning on using it as a second display for my mac pro but I discovered that target display on an imac 2011 for some ridiculous reason only supports thunderbolt to thunderbolt despite the port being backwards compatible (typical apple BS). I assume nobody has come up with some hack/workaround? I really don't want to sell it as it is such a nice looking computer but I don't have much use for it other than as a display!

I guess you are using a pre-2013 MP without Thunderbolt?
I used 27" iMacs as external displays and found it to be a sub-par solution: the fans on the iMac can come on (despite only using it as display). Have you tried using a mini DP cable? I can't remember what I used (sorry).
Use the iMac as a Server. Replace the HD with a SSD. The Thunderbolt connection should give you plenty of HD capacity.

Why would you buy a six year old display for anything? Especially one that's sometimes more suitable for using as a reflective makeup mirror than a display?
