Hey, from what I've read (example here) it's possible to hook up an NVMe drive to an iMac mid 2011 via an Apple T3 to T2 adapter and a self-powered dock. This is the setup I'm using, with a self-powered dual NVMe enclosure (from Sabrent found here). I'm running macOS Sierra 10.12.6.

I'm able to see the drive when I boot my iMac in Ubuntu, however in macOS it does not show up in disk utility and does not show available memory in system information:

I formatted the drive from Ubuntu, as shown.

Can anybody give some clarification concerning this?

Never mind. Needed to upgrade to HighSierra by going to the apple support page for getting older versions of macOS.

Anyway if anybody wants to know, by using this Sabrent dual enclosure that's self-powered I didn't have to purchase a massive self-powered Thunderbolt 3 dock when I don't need all the features that come with it. All that's needed is a power source since T2 -> T3 cannot bus power.
