Hey all!

I know Apple had a recall on this drive because of the high failure rate. I ignored the recall at the time because I had too much on and it was never a convenient time to have to drag the iMac to Apple, be without it for a few days, then have to reinstall everything.

Karma has now well and truly bit me on the backside and it’s failed.

Booked in at the Genius Bar tomorrow to get it looked at and I was just wondering if anyone has had any experiences with Apple still doing it free of charge.

It’s been a great machine and not had any other issues in the almost 5 years since I’ve had it.

They will likely say its outside the recall period.

Try speaking with the manager, they might give you a break.

Personally I would forgo Apple and upgrade it to an SSD yourself or professionally. With a little research and knowledge the 2012 iMac isn't that hard to upgrade. It will feel like a brand new machine.

I had this issue several months ago with my Late 2012 27" iMac. The OEM HD was not going to be covered - the recall period had ended.

I went ahead and bought a 1TB SSD kit from OWC and installed it. The speed of booting and opening apps, copying files and all that.... much much faster. You might be able to do the repair yourself. There are video instructions available on the web.
