iMac 2012 or Mac Pro 2013 ?

I ask you an advices::

I work on 3d, Visual FX Enviroment , i Use now on macbook Air These Software: ( Lucology Modo-Maxon Cinema 4D XL-Autodesk Maya and Adobe Illustrator and Premiere).
Now I have a Macbook Air 2012 from my friend, but is more slow...and I must have a plane to update Machine :

So I ask you this: for My Job and software in Top,

is good an iMac 2012 , or I need to wait for Mac Pro 2013 next year ???


After, Mac Pro 2013 will be supported by Future release of OS X , in future year???

Or , if Mac Pro 2013 will remain the LAST Mac Pro for Apple, Risk to do not supported for long Time???? So good an iMac 2012???

I hope , to receive answers for expert of Apple .

Hi,

If you can get the job done with a Macbook air, then a high end iMac will certainly be fine for you.

As for a 2013 Mac Pro, my brother is a graphic designer and he has a power pc Mac Pro and he still can work on it. So with a 2013 model, you would be fine for years even if it might be the last Mac Pro. I'm not a designer so I wouldn't know but my brother doesn't like glossy display for work. With a Mac Pro you can choose the monitor that you want, glossy or not.

The Mac Pro is a lot more expensive, and, again I'm not a designer, but I absolutely love my 2009 27 inches iMac, that I use also as an external monitor for my 2012 cMBP.

If you can wait a couple more months, you could wait for the next Mac Pro then compare.

so, my dream was always what a day i'd buy a Mac Pro , for my job , because I have work on windows for years.

From 2 months , I had borrowed from a friend a macbook Air 13" 2012, waiting for the BIG Step , iMac or Mac Pro.

The problem is that macbook Air is more slow , don't only in rendering scenes, but also in viewport visualization!

And always I work with comlex 3d model , with milion of polygons!!

So I don't know if iMac is sufficient , or i waiting for new Mac Pro 2013..

If I acquire Mac Pro 2013 , will be the last? Apple in future years will update VGA of new Mac Pro to make it update with the times???
These are also my doubts.

If I acquire Mac pro 2013 , will I have the certainty that Apple supports it for instance the next 5 release of OS X , for example OS X 11.3 teoric ????


Now attac some my render where , software 3d freeze on macbook Air 2012, and these renders don't are heavy....so don't imagine with much heavier work I do!!!

I will go with the available one...

Nobody knows for sure about the 2013 Mac Pro, only thing is a comment of Tim Cook. So I will buy a maxed out iMac 2012 (if delivers). Or I max out it myself with:

SSD
Big HDD
Better Graphics card
Maximum RAM

and so on...bigger displays dont damage design work I suppose, but....

You can wait maybe 6 months and see if the Mac Pro 2013 comes out the gates. If not, the iMac 2012 maybe in that time is a little bit cheap.

For any hi-end 3d work you should be using a mac pro. All the apps that you use take advantage of multicore processors also hyper-threading when you are rendering. With the mac pro you will be able to upgrade your GPU as needed, add tons of ram and have a fast SSD or HHD raid array.

In the world of 3D the more cores the better. And by the looks of some of your renders you are doing some serious work.

With an imac you will only have a 4 core option and no GPU upgrade path. I personally don't think the imac can take the beating that 3D work requires.

If you are going to switch from a PC to do your 3D work I would suggest a mac pro.

First, great job on those kitchen!

Of course if you can afford it, the Mac Pro maxed out is the best choice, but it's expensive. Over the years you will be able to upgrade the graphic card.

The architect who conceived my house worked on an iMac, so the Mac Pro is a lot more powerful but an iMac is great too.

People will always tell you that buying the most expensive one makes the more sense, but in the end it is up to you to decide.

My next door neibour owns a ferrari, my wife owns a Wolkswagen, is car looks better, is more performing but my wife still can go to the grocery with it.

So, what do you do? Racing or driving around. If you don't race, don't buy a ferrari.

But if I had the money, I would certainly buy a ferrari!

That kitchen looks great! It's actually amazing (referring to a previous post) how many people are still using legacy Power PC systems and still get the job done.

Man, these Mac Pro's/PowerMac's are well built machines. Just a tad outdated. Just a tad.

well , this is the my true doubt.

If buy Mac Pro 2013 , I can be secure that it will have update in next years , almost on VGA and CPU if possible from Apple , so that for example in 2016 I can Install teoric OS X 11.3 on old Mac Pro 2013 ????? Ever if Apple update hardware of Mac Pro 2013 in future years?????

This doubts is also the factor that I have considering if buy Mac Pro 2013 with more money ...........it will have an added value.

At this point in time it's impossible to compare two machines that don't exist.

You just have to wait, nobody knows now and this thread is pure speculation. Nobody will give you the right answer.

If I really needed some powerful machine right now I'd buy new top 27 inch iMac next week when it comes out. Upgrade the RAM in it and just keep using it for another year.
When/If new Mac Pro comes out, you can sell the iMac for at least 60-70% of the original cost though losing only small portion of money. You can use those money to buy Mac Pro. Those months that you'll be productive with iMac you can earn enough money to cover the difference.

Maybe building powerful hackintosh as a stop-gap would be OK too, the only downside is, that you won't probably sell it for good money and you'll spend approximately the same as buying the iMac.

If you actually make money doing this the answer is simple. If not, then ask yourself if you really need one. Lets just say I've seen countless people buy tech they thought they were going to use for business and end up using it just as a high end media/gaming center.

Dude given the level of work that you're doing (that kitchen looks amazing!), I would not be waiting for 2013 to get a serious computer. Either get the top of the line iMac (I wouldn't buy the giant SSD, it won't help with rendering really), or buy a second hand beast Mac Pro with a very high level graphics card, or just buy a Windows beast. The last option will give you the best performance per dollar, but it depends on how you feel about windows.

Don't worry too much about the future. Anything from 2012 or so will last a very long time. Just buy something powerful soon and get to work!

I am assuming the iMac you are referring to is the new slim design that will be released this Nov and Dec. Just take note this iMac is a new generation and "untested". Maybe the same goes for the new 2013 Mac Pro if it undergoes a new design too. Not that I am being too negative, anything new and untested would need further observation.

It's hard to speculate now but maybe you can get a second hand Mac Pro for the time being if you use the machine in deriving income. And later next year you can invest in the new Mac Pro and keep your old Mac Pro as your backup machine or sell it.

Years ago my 2006 Mac Pro videocard died and I was in the middle of a rush project. Good thing I had a second backup Mac Pro so my work is not interrupted and was able to complete the project. If I only had one machine, I would lose the project.

Yep I would definitely get top of the line GPU (GTX 680 MX) and CPU, as for RAM I don't think it's as important. 16 GB should be ok. Make sure you have a good look at prices, and make sure Apple isn't ripping you off. Replacing RAM is the easiest thing you can do. You could even just start at 8 GB, then do work, and watch your pageouts. If they're just a little bad, go to 16 GB, if they're stupid bad, go for 32 GB. As for HDD, again no biggie, but you may feel like getting a Fusion drive if you do a lot of file work. I know I don't want to ever buy a computer that doesn't have an SSD, my MBA feels way faster than my iMac.
