Carbon Copy Cloner works fine for me, as long as you select Legacy Bootable Copy Assistant. Please note that you have to make a completely new backup each time if you want it to be bootable…

The procedure is weird and counter-intuitive.

You might find this article useful. https://eclecticlight.co/2022/11/10/make-a-ventura-bootable-external-disk-for-an-apple-silicon-mac/

I couldn't get it to work with Carbon Copy Cloner, but could with Super Duper.

Bear in mind that if you ever need to restore from your bootable clone, it may not work even if it did when tested, so it would be unwise to think you can rely on it. I have yet to verify whether or not backing up changes to the clone has the effect of rendering it unbootable.

EDIT: seems I can still boot from my clone after backing up changes since the clone was first created. These were not complicated changes, but fairly substantial.

Oh boy, definitely much easier on an Intel Mac. Good luck and reading for the OP!

Plug in external, wipe it clean, remove any partitions, you want a clean drive, format to APFS.
Carbon copy cloner, do a standard backup to that drive.
Download ventura installer, run it and install to your external right over the backup
Your machine will restart several times and then boot into your external with all settings, files and apps.
Works perfectly.
He has an intel mac not silicon.

Oh yeah, it’s right in the title of the thread, good eyes 👀

Indeed, quite easy with CCC usually…

I wouldn't trust a legacy clone anymore, my way is a fresh install almost like using migration asst.
I am, at this right moment, doing a "backup" of my Sequoia external Thunderbolt boot disk to an external 10 gbps USB-C SSD enclosure. Then, I will replace the NVMe in the TB enclosure with a bigger one and use the Legacy assistant to put back my Sequoia boot partition.

I did this maneuver several times in the last years and it always worked, on Hackintoshes and real Macs.

Mind you, it's not t a critic against your distrust of the CCC Legacy assistant, just an observation.

Cheers,

Patrice
