Hi

Is it possible to upgrade the 2017 iMac 27 to Coffee Lake?

like the i9 9900

the socket is LGA 1151, so the Coffe Lake should fit, i heard however that the firmware doesn't support it

but

could this be possible, or even in theory?

how likely is it to happen in future?

could there be some custom patch to support Coffee Lake?

Good idea, but usually doesnt work in imacs. I have an imac with i7-2600 and an i7-3770k didnt work. Same thing just 6 years ago.

Try it and let us know :)

Exactly.

Best way to know is to try it yourself.
Considering how difficult an iMac is to take apart, actually a full disassembly, if not done before, the risk of breaking something is high, and if you bothered to read what I wrote, here in a nice quote for you:

The name of the game here is chipset. Every processor needs a certain chipset to work correctly. The chipset is sort of the rulebook for the motherboard, so the CPU and chipset needs to match.

The chipset that seems to be in the 2017 iMacs is the Intel z170. That is only compatible to processors in the 6000 and 7000 series Intel core i3/i5/i7 processors.

For the 8000 and 9000 series, you need a 300 series chipset. So anything above 7000 series Intel processors, won't work.

And here are the sources I found:

There is no yield what so ever, for all the hard work.
