If you create a virtual machine through parallels that uses an older OS X (if you have a copy), you should be able to download a copy of sierra.

Your other option is back up your data by copying it over to an external drive, then restore the computer, then drag your data back. You'll have to reinstall the programs. Make sure you deactivate the software that can do that.

Must be because your 2017 iMac won't boot from the copy of MacOS Sierra in the App Store (downloads fine on my 2015 iMac running Sierra). Wait for the release of 10.12.6 and try again.

Hrmm that would explain why it doesnt want to boot off the usb key with a Sierra downloaded from an older mac ...

Can someone with a 2017 imac confirm they cannot download either ? I called apple and they told me its not normal and to bring it back to the apple store .....

Back up anything you need then boot into recovery mode. Once in recovery mode select disk utility. Wipe out your main drive and then exit recovery mode. This should allow you to download and install Sierra via internet recovery.

It's around 5GB so it will take a while.
