I currently have 16GB (4GB X 4) RAM installed on my 2017 iMac. I am contemplating getting an additional 32 GB of RAM which will make it 40GB (to be used together existing pair of 4GB X 2). Will it help much for my current work. I am using a VM (Parallels) running Windows OS, Xcode with 1 project and Android Studios with several projects opened at the same time.

Any advice appreciated.

I have been using 40GB (2x16GB added to the stock Apple 2x4GB) for the year and a half I have owned my 2017 iMac and also heavily use Windows 10 in Parallels VM for my work. It has resulted in a night and day difference in improved performance.

Granted, I was going from 8GB to 40GB, not 16GB to 40GB but with large VMs RAM is key to optimal performance and the more the better. To this end I can recommend the upgrade highly.

This, plus extra RAM means you can allocate more RAM to the VM to further improve performance.
