I have just received my iMac2019, 1TbSSd, Vega 48 and have a couple of issues.

When I first updated to latest Mojave, it wouldn't even turn back on, but after a bout 3 hr it seems to boot itself and seems to be ok now. But it does take > 30 seconds to boot, is this normal for Mojave? My 2013 iMac using an 850evo on my BlackMagic dock would boot High Sierra in ~10 sec.

Now the issue I have is it takes ~2 minutes to wake from sleep if at all.
I think I have narrowed it down to the external monitor(s). When it does not wake if I unplug them, the iMac screen will wake.

Some times while waking it will ping pong between the monitors, one screen will light up for a second as the others go dark, then does this indefinitely.

My current connections are:
usbc1 -> TB3-->TB2 apple adapter --> BlackMagicUltraDock --> Acer XR382CQK
usbc2 --> Belkin USB-C to HDMI Adapter --> Samsung TV
wired keyboard

I have tried
Reset the SMC
Reset the NVRAM

Is there anything else I could try? Any logs to check for what is happening?

The first thing I’d do is remove all the external docks and devices and try booting. If that helps, then add devices back 1 by 1, booting each time, to see which one is causing the slow boot.

With that said......it would concern me a little if my machine had refused to boot for 3 hours, then just suddenly started to work again.

Thanks. Yes, it was concerning, now I'm just hoping that was my one gremlin for this machine.

The slow boot >30 sec is without anything attached, what should the boot time be with this machine?
The only issue left is the not waking from sleep when the external displays are attached.

I don’t have a 2019 iMac, but I can tell you that my 2015 MBP definitely takes longer to boot Mojave than it did High Sierra.

I’ve just timed my machine, and it took 32 secs including typing my password. I have FileVault enabled.

Do you have the same issue with just one screen attached?

If so, is it the same no matter which screen is attached?

You could check the system logs in console.app to see what’s happening during wake-up.

Yes, either screen, no screens attached and it'll wake up fine. I've never seen this before...

It worked flawlessly on my 2013, the only difference is I have to use the usb-c to TB2 and usb-c to HDMI adapters.

I'll check the system logs tonight, thanks.

Get it exchanged. I got the exact same machine and have absolutely zero issues

The new one came in --boots fine and I can even reset the nvram.

However the sleep issue still exists(this can't be normal - WakeTime: 123.471 sec) :

Any suggestions? Do I just need to set hibmode back to 0?

That’s seriously weird. Did you do a restore when you got the new one or did you install from scratch?

I did nothing but create a test account(it came with latest mojave), hooked stuff up and started testing. Apple Care has not been to helpful, but I did finally get them to escalate it.

When it says Display is turned on it's really not, all screens wake after the > 2 min wait

To follow up 16 days later. still not fixed.
It has been escalated to engineering, but all they did is ask the same questions in a different way( with a 2 day turn around). There is a bug still in Mojave with some external screens off a dock. What an absolute horrible experience, especially after dropping ~4k on a new machine.

Looks like I'll be shipping back this new iMac for a refund, support is pretty much useless.

My experience too with a different issue culminating in my getting a refund. But yes, Apple support is pretty useless. The dragging on between the support agents and engineers is worse than dealing with bureaucracy.

I wonder if it's possible to purchase Apple Care just for hardware sans the phone support, for less.

Aargh. Sleep/wake especially with external monitors, drives, etc just seems like something Apple can't solve...or won't. I ran Caffeine forever on my last iMac to prevent similar problems, including sudden ejection of drives. In dealing with my second monitor and 2019 iMac I got tipped that another cable would solve it, and it appeared to (USB-C Tbolt 3 to DisplayPort). The Dell supplied cable, ostensibly the same, caused problems.

Even so, it seems have to reset NVRAM too often, and/or the SMC. It's like it has Alzheimers.

I'd keep an eye on it as I thought my issue was fixed by using a USB-C Tbolt 3 -->HDMI, worked until I rebooted. Then back to 2 min wakes.
I don't have best confidence with Apple Engineering as I sent them the CaptureData that captures all the diagnostic information/logs, waited 2 days to hear back to have them ask "so what monitors are connected"?
It's really frustrating to have the AppleCare "specialist" as a go between with engineering and wait 2 days to get asked the same questions
