Hi everyone,

I was looking into getting some RAM for my iMac (I have a 9600k from last year with Vega48). I have read that ideally you will replace the existing RAM with some new one so you don´t have different capacity slots.

I was thinking of getting 2x 16 from crucial and putting away the standard 8GB, but that option has been out of stock for a while, and tired of watiing.

I don´t do any massive video editting, so I was thinking of gett 2x8 which added to my 8 from stock, would make 24GB. Is this a good option, or should I take the hit and leave the 2x8 by themselves even if that just gives me 16GB instead of 24?

Cheers,
kaintxu

You won't notice any difference in performance except in synthetic benchmarks, and even then its minimal. It would affect iGPU performance more, but there is not one with the CPUs in the iMac 27" so no need to worry. The additional RAM would be far more beneficial

Thanks a lot,

So in resume, the 24GB will work better than 16 even if it´s with different sized memories?

This is, I have enough with 24GB, and that can save me 70 quid, so if I can just go that route and have 24 rather than 16 with no hit in performance (and actually improvement over just 16) I would rather go that route.

Correct, I would not throw out the existing 8 GB or buy another matching set of 16 GB - just place both in for 24 GB.

edit: and here's a good thread on the exact same question:

Thanks a lot,

The difference is that the post you link is about using the 8GB (2x4GB) with a single 16GB stick. All I have currently is the 2x4, and my idea is to buy 2x8 Sticks.

Still same, right?

Bought these, so all done.

Correct same idea - dual channel RAM just means using the same RAM type in all slots or in pairs in the specific slots or not, does not matter what size or pairing (its either paired or not).

"Bought these, so all done."
I bought that last year for my i5 3.7 2019 27" iMac, as it was the nearest retail equivalent of the Apple installed 8GB.
It works fine, without a hitch.

I have mixing RAM in my Vega 48 iMac and have never had a problem with it (I have the original stock 2 x 4gb modules and an additional 2 x 16gb modules, making up 40gb total) so I would go for the 24gbs.
