I've just got an imac 2020, my first ever Apple product :)

Its a great machine but im having an issue reading files from external SSD thumb drive which is in NTFS

I've used this ssd drive on windows, linux mint and chrome OS on all those platforms the drive operates perfectly never had an issue. I was planning on buying paragon so i could keep using the drive on chrome OS and my new mac, im ditching windows and linux.

I cant put the files online because i often work on them with limited wi-fi so external drive is the way to go for me.

But problem is i've noticed one folder with hundreds of files in it is not seen by my imac, its not hidden either as i've turned on shown hidden files. To get round it i copied the said folder again in linux to just another folder on the same drive and now the mac can see it.

Problem is i have thousands of folders and my concern is there maybe others and things are going to get missed

Paragon said their software doesn't replace the read driver in apple, it only enables write so that isn't going to solve the problem

All i can think of is go into windows and copy everything off the external SSD drive, then format it as exFAT, its 250G so not too big, then copy everything back, im pretty certain that will work. Does this sound like the best solution?

Is Apples NTFS read support poor, or maybe there is something possibly wrong with my drive? Its a drive that is used alot to copy small amounts of data everyday, im just wondering maybe its to do with the fact TRIM has never been used, i doubt the PCS i've used it on supported that and maybe the drive isn't organising files that well anymore and the mac is been a bit more picky than the other platforms.

While OSX can see NTFS volumes, it cannot write to them (natively). If you want to share files between multiple platforms, you need to format the drive in a neutral format that all OSes have native read/write functionality to. You want your external drive formatted in exFAT.

Moving files on an NTFS formatted drive while booted in OSX is dangerous as it can potentially corrupt the files.

There are applications which enable write access to NTFS volumes, here is but one:
