Afternoon all,

Don't suppose anyone knows if Apple are planning to enable digital audio over the Mini DisplayPort socket on the latest iMacs?

At the moment I run Mini DisplayPort -> DVI-D adapter for video and optical output into amp for full digital surround but would love it to be just a straight:

Mini DisplayPort -> HDMI (with full 1080p and digital audio).

Anyone know if there'll be a firmware upgrade in the pipeline anytime soon?

Cheers,

Unlikely.

I don't think that what you want is possible.

Likely not soon but should be possible

Pretty common issue, no one wants more than one cable to plug their Mac (/w miniDP) into their TV (/w HDMI). The miniDP spec supports audio and video but so far Apple and a couple others (Dell at least) still don't send audio over miniDP.

It looks like the issue is getting the audio signal routed to the miniDP output (to be combined /w video and sent on a single cable). Adapters exist to take video from miniDP and combine with audio from USB. It achieves a single HDMI output /w both audio/video but that's kinda cheating. To make it work properly, nVidia would probably need to provide a way to route digital audio out through the miniDP port. It appears AMD just solved this issue in Catalyst 9.12... http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/ATICatalyst912Hotfix.aspx.

It's encouraging to see AMD provide a fix, hopefully nVidia isn't far behind... then we just need to wait for Apple to release it so maybe by end of 2010 it'll get done. Someday someone will finally decide it's worth solving and millions will rejoice... until then we have Monoprice and Kanex.

cheers. yeah, i thought that it supported both audio and video but guess we're in the hands of nvidia for now then...
