I'm interested in imac 21.5 inch with HD 4670.
one thing i have to concern before purchasing is the fan speed of imac.

if you have imac 21.5 with HD 4670 or 9400m and see this thread,
please post your imac's fan speed and temperature on each state in the following format.

full load or heavy load : * rpm, * Celsius, cpu xx%
idle : xx rpm, xx Celsius

hope you help me in deciding whether or not to buy it.
i've searched forum for those thread and seen pretty a lot.
but all of them mentioned about fan and temp under idle or said just good without accurate numerical value.
I'm pretty sensitive to noise and temperature. that's why i posted this thread.

thanks in advance.

Let me save you the bother.

1. It's virtually silent even under load
2. It gets hot when working
3. The heat doesn't cause any problems

I don't understand why this is a buying factor for you?

I worried about the same thing before i bought this imac (HD4670). Now that i've bought it i see no problems in performance based on it's temperature.
Using istat pro :
Fan : 1200 to ??
Cpu : 40c to 60c (max load : rendering in cinema4d + itunes)
GPU diode : 58c to 70c (max : complex 3d modelling in c4d/sketchup)
GPU heatsink : 59c to 70
HD : 50c to 55c
mem controller : 50 to 70

I dont know about the normal/safe temp for imac, and i dont use smcfan. But i dont see any problems, rendering worked just fine. Apps loads in a zap, even if its in a state of max load. And when it gets too hot the fan works faster and the inside of the imac gets cooler immediately. So far im pretty satisfied with this imac regarding it's temperature.

The only temperature problem i encountered is when imac running vista (bootcamp). It's idle temp is so high, i can feel the right upper side of my imac is hot. I remember playing CoD in vista and the Gpu temp reached over 80c. But so far, that temp didn't cause any problem in my hardwares.

My advice :
if you work in OSX ; buy this machine (HD4670)! you'll have no worries about temp. At first i was worried about temp, knowing that i will expose this imac in nonstop rendering and 3d modelling. But i think that apple wont make a product that cant take care of it self. Even if you ever encounter any problem just remember that you have that applecare. And if you still search for opinions on the internet, its just endless. Because theres millions of pros and cons (including mine).

If you're a gamer or your workflow is around windows, go buy a PC. You can always tweak PC's fans or add another cooling fan. I think imac only designed to run OSX, maybe windows ocassionally.

I hope my experience will help you.

PS : sorry for my bad english

thank you all a lot.

your answer was helpful. thank you.
the details of your experience alleviated my worries adequately, there's no mention about fan speed under load though.
