I was just about to buy iMac 21,5" when the guy at the store tells me that iMac 21,5" is not Vesa compatible ? Whaaaat, is this really true? and if so, has steve jobs gone mad?

I'm pretty sure that he was telling the truth, the smaller iMacs havn''t been vesa compatible since at least the first aluminum ones, it may have been longer than that though. If you get the 27" iMac it is compatible.

Thanks for the answer, okay, too bad then. Guess I'll have to go with another computer :(

and all vesa mounts just look uuuugly , its only a bit scaffolding to hold screens on the wall , so doesn't make sense to make a pretty design as nobody will see it

and the aftermarket vesa mount option has the advantage that the stand is still there where you can just place the keyboard on when not used , i find that really practical

Agreed, the regular Apple VESA adaptor is no beauty, but as you say its the other side you look at :)
