I've heard loads of problems with the 27" running hot and fan noise with a I7. So was going to purchase a i5 as I don't need the i7

But then started looking at the 21.5" high end model and noticed the i5 isn't as high as the 27" version so was thinking upgrading the 21.5" with a i7

Will this run hot like the 27"

Also has anyone gone 32GB on the 21.5" model. I want to run a few VM and some virtual devices I run could do with 16GB plus, but they don't do a 24GB option. Its £360 jump from 16GB to 32GB which isn't cheap

Thanks all

You can configure the 21.5" iMac with an i7. i7-7700 to be specific.

Quick caveat, I have NO first hand experience so this is just my somewhat educated guess.

That said the i7 found in the 27" iMac (7700K) is not the same as the i7 found in the 21" iMac (7700).

The TDP of the 7700K is 95w, the TDP of the 7700 is 65w.

I've found around 85w is what the current iMac cooling design can tolerate without cranking the fans way up in nearly all uses. So the i7 in the 21" should be fine regardless of what you are doing if noise is a concern.
