Hopefully someone can help me out with this one, my iMac 24" aluminium just restarted whilst browsing yesterday and hasn't come back on since, just the white/grey screen, no apple logo, no spinning icon, tried the install disk doesn't see it, reset the pram, removed power cable for 10 mins restarted - nothing, slight whirring noise from dvd drive but won't boot, i've even replaced the hard disk in case it was that - nothing... I'm at the end of my ideas now... starting to think it's the logic board looking through various forums... please tell me it's not and it's something simpler! I'm out of warranty and out of cash! please help!!!!!!

I'm probably going to say something very stupid because I don't really know what I'm talking about, but before jumping to the conclusion you have a dead Mac on your hands I think you might consider replacing your iMac's battery and see if that does the trick. Good luck!
Couple more things to try. Remove all external haddrives / devices (except for mouse and keyboard). Also, reset the SMC (power off the iMac, unplug the power, press and hold the power button for 10 seconds, then plugin the power and turn on again).
Sounds like a boot device issue, but it could be a bad logic board/ battery/ ram even. Your best bet is to take it in and get it looked at.

Replaced the harddisk? Have you been messing with the iMacs innards? It's not recommended. How far is your nearest Apple store? How far out of warranty? If you purchased less than 2 years ago, credit card supplemental insurance kicks in
I have the same issue with my iMac 24inch. It has done this in the past but would start back up after a few tries. However this time it's been a few days and can't get it to boot back up. Just gets stuck on this white screen of death and never boots up.

That is bizarre! So there was a problem with the replacement hard disk you installed?? What was wrong with the one you initially replaced?
I had the original HD on my iMac die a few weeks ago and since it was still in Applecare I let Apple replace it. That said, a bad HD should not preclude you from booting to other media like your Leopard/Snow Leopard DVD or an external HD drive. I would never have suspected a bad HD based on the symptoms you described, or at least not ONLY a bad HD.
My Imac would not boot it just spun the gear about 20 times and froze. I called Apple-Care and they tried several things. Then they made an appointment for me to have it fixed. Guess what ? I tried the above fix and it worked. Thanks for the good solution. I cancelled my Genius appointment.

Thanks for all the replies, I'm absolutely stumped that the problem was down to a hard disk issue, I've got it back the engineer report and all it mentions is that there was a hard disk issue which was solved under the initial scrutiny, there was no extra charge for anything just the £46 scrutiny charge?? I too am baffled by this as I was all set for the logic board being bad, I've no idea why I couldn't boot from CD, couldn't start in single user mode... no idea why the hard disk I installed did nothing... It's all very weird.. maybe it was something else that the engineer did with their software and it kick started it back up?? I really have no idea... but VERY happy it's fixed so I'm not going to moan about it, just need to install my new snow leopard purchase!
