I was at CompUSA a few days ago comparing the IMacs. I don't know if it was my eyes or the brightness was set differently but the 24" IMac was MUCH brighter than the 20" and 17" models. I will be purchasing an IMac this fall mainly for digital photography and videography. I know a good monitor is a must have for for the colors and picture quality when dealing in line of work. Are the 24s naturally brighter than the lower end models?

You are correct, the 24" is much brighter than the 20" and 17". Correct me if I am wrong, but I think the 24" has a brightness of 400cd/m2 and the 20" has 270cd/m2. I am not sure about the 17", but I think it might even have less brightness than the 20".

Yes the 24" is brighter not by much but it is noticeable when the systems are side by side. Watch out for shady sales practices at the Apple store near me they have the 24's brightness all the way up the 20's brightness at about 2/3 and the 17's at about half and unless you know Macs and know to change it it makes the other two look awful in comparison.

I had a 24" and a 20" side by side in an apple store with the brightness all the way up and the 24 inch was substantially brighter, now I own a 24" and I keep the brightness down close to half way to make it Match the 20' ACD i paired it with.

(it's F15 by the way)

I wouldn't want a screen as bright as the 24", it is too damn bright. Sometimes my 20" is even too bright... (yay, macrumors' 3600001st post :D)
