When I start up my iMac 24", I can hear the hard drive being accessed for 5-10 minutes after the computer is up and running. Is this normal? I get the feeling that this computer is constantly accessing its hard drive, even when it is idle or working under a minimal load. Do others have this problem?

Do you have at least 10% of the drive free or has it filled up close to capacity? That would do it.

I wouldn't say mine does it for ten minutes.

Mine will do it when I switch on and the little thing is going round and round and loading on the white screen.

and when it returns from sleep when being asleep for more than a few hours.
