My 24 inch imac 2.93 ghz has just been delivered and there is a small problem. Since starting to use it, there is a faint rumble coming from the machine that can be heard when there are no other background noises. I checked istat and the fans seem to be running at their normal temperatures. I'm guessing it's either a noisy fan or maybe the harddrive. Any advice ? I guess i could live with it but i don't want to. Are imacs supposed to be nearly silent ? Thanks

Do you have a disc in the optical drive? I'm not sure what the noise level of the drive is on the current iMacs, but I have an iMac G5 and the optical drive can get pretty noisy when you first put the disc in.

There should be no such rumble with an imac. The only noise should occasionally be a soft whirr of the fans which is imperceptible unless one focuses on it. I would suggest you take it to an apple store for a replacement. It sounds like a "built to order" machine though if it was delivered. In this case I would call apple and return it.

thanks for the replies. There definitely is no disk in the drive. It's just a low constant whirring noise. Unfortunately i live in ireland so there's no apple store nearby. Do you think i'll have any problems in getting apple to exchange it ?

In your first post you mentioned rumble and in the last a whirr. Whirr is OK for imac, rumble NO. If you do intend to return it I would just say when you call, call with the intention of returning it and not polling phone support if its normal or not. The noise is not acceptable and be adamant about that. Even if this noise is normal, whether it bothers you or not is what matters.

If you want to be super thorough you could post a sound/video cilp and get direct feedback from people here. Adjectives can only describe things so well.

cheers

They are giving me a full refund. Great customer care as usual. I'll probably get a 17 macbook pro instead as a desktop replacement.
